MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2019) – Despite a home run from senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 17-9 decision to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday night.
The Mavericks (1-6) have dropped three games in a row, while the Owls (3-4) have won two games in a row.
Murphy went 2-for-5 with two RBI and senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 4-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman Ethan McMenamy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) pitched 0.2 innings with four runs allowed to take the loss.
Southern Connecticut was led by Mike DeMartino who had a game-high-tying three RBI. Jared Henry pitched 5.2 innings to earn the win.
The Mavericks got on the board first in the top of the first when Ortiz Sanchez singled home Murphy who singled earlier in the inning to make it 1-0. The Owls answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Mercy tied the game up in the top of the second when Dieguez scored on an error by the third baseman after walking earlier in the inning to make it 2-2. The Mavericks took the lead in the third inning when McMenamy singled home Ortiz Sanchez who reached on a single earlier in the inning to bring the score to 3-2.
The Mavericks tacked on a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to make it 6-2. In the fifth inning, Ortiz Sanchez scored on a wild pitch after singling earlier in the inning. Murphy made it 6-2 in the sixth inning when he hit a two-run home run that also scored senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville).
Southern Connecticut made it 6-5 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mercy increased the lead to 7-5 in the seventh inning when Dieguez singled home McMenamy. The Owls retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mercy tied the game up at 8-8 in the top of the eighth when senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) scored on a wild pitch.
The Owls took the lead for good with nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 17-8 lead. Mercy scored a run in the ninth on a Justin Renauto (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) RBI groundout, but it was not enough as the Owls earned the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Franklin Pierce at 9 a.m.
