Murphy and Sadallah Record Team-High Three RBI as Baseball Takes on Franklin Pierce

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 24, 2019) – Despite a game-high three RBI from both seniors Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (1-7) have dropped four games in a row, while the Ravens (4-1) have won four of their first five games.

Sadallah went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI and Murphy went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and freshmen James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) both went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) pitched 4.2 innings with one earned run allowed to take the loss.

Franklin Pierce was led by Jethro Hurt who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Derek Duffy went 5.0 innings to pick up the win and Shane Kittila pitched the final four innings to earn the save.

The Mavericks got on the board first in the top of the first when Murphy singled home Sadallah who led off the game with a single to make it 1-0. Franklin Pierce responded with four runs on four hits and two errors to take a 4-1 lead after one inning.

Mercy retook the lead in the top of the second with four runs. Sadallah hit a three-run triple that scored sophomore Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley), Dieguez and DeRosa to tie the game up at 4-4. Mooradian gave the Mavericks the lead when he drove in Sadallah in the next at bat on a single to make it 5-4. Franklin Pierce tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the inning.

It remained 5-5 until the bottom of the fifth when the Ravens plated a run on a passed ball to make it 6-5. Franklin Pierce added on two more runs in the sixth inning to bring the score to 8-5 after six innings.

Mercy rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to make it 8-7. Sadallah led off the inning with a hit by pitch and Mooradian reached on a single. Murphy followed with a double that scored both Sadallah and Mooradian to get the Mavericks within a run. Mercy could not find the equalizer and the Ravens came away with the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 1st when they host Bloomfield at 3 p.m.
