DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 3, 2019) – Powered by six shutout innings from senior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) and two RBI from senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) in game one, the Mercy College baseball team earned a 3-0 victory over Le Moyne College in game one of a doubleheader before falling 6-4 in game two on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win in the opener and pick up a win against the No. 7 team in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll, while the Dolphins (4-4) remain .500 on the year.
Game 1: Mercy 3, Le Moyne 0
After Tise held the Dolphins scoreless in the top of the first, the Mavericks responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) then hit a triple down the right field line that scored Sadallah to make it 1-0. Garcia later made it 2-0 when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Mooradian.
Tise limited Le Moyne to just two hits in his six innings of work and Mercy added on a run in the bottom of the third to build a 3-0 lead. Sadallah led off the inning with a single and was brought home on a Garcia RBI single to right field.
Junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Garcia went 1-for-1 and Mooradian went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sadallah finished 3-for-3 with two runs and Tise picked up his first win of the season with six strikeouts.
Nick Nevins and Michael Smith both went 1-for-3 for Le Moyne. Ryan Murphy pitched a complete game with three runs allowed to take the loss.
Game 2: Le Moyne 6, Mercy 4
Mercy once again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Mooradian tripled and senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) followed in the next at bat with a triple of his own to score Mooradian and make it 1-0. Murphy scored to make it 2-0 following a Garcia sacrifice fly to left field.
Le Moyne responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead.
It remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Mercy scored a run to tie the game up at 3-3. Sadallah led off the frame with a hit by pitch and then stole two bases before scoring on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins answered in the top of the sixth with three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Nevins recorded a two-run single to center and would later score on a fielder's choice.
Mercy plated a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Paul Cozzolino (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) single that scored Sadallah. The Mavericks had the bases loaded looking for more, but a strikeout ended the threat and game.
Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cozzolino went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-3 and freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 1-for-3. Junior James Jakuba (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Central Connecticut State University) went 5.0 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss. Junior Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Le Moyne was led by Brian O'Mara who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Sam Walsh went 6.2 innings with six strikeouts to earn the win and Jacob Maser recorded the final out to earn the save.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 5th when they host Nyack at 3 p.m.
