ETTRICK, Va. (Mar. 9, 2019) – Powered by two RBI from senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and the game-winning RBI from freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) in game two, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Virginia State University in game one before earning a 10-9 victory in game two on Saturday.
The Mavericks (3-9) snap a two-game losing streak with the win in game two, while the Trojans (6-4) had their three-game win streak snapped.
Game 1: Virginia State 4, Mercy 1
Freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y/Plainview Old Bethpage) drove in the Mavericks lone run and sophomore Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) took the loss in game one.
Game 2: Mercy 10, Virginia State 9
Ortiz Sanchez hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in two runs. Sophomore Paul Cozzolino (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) recorded a single and later scored the game-winning run on a Dieguez sacrifice fly. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) earned the win and junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) picked up the save.
