DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 12, 2019) – Powered by a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth from senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team earned an 8-7 victory over Concordia College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-9) have won three games in a row, while the Clippers (4-9) have dropped two games in a row.
Murphy went 1-for-5 and junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and five stolen bases. Freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 2-for-3 and freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) went 1-for-3. Senior Fernando Figueroa (Bayamon, P.R./Monroe College) pitched the first 3.2 innings with one earned run allowed to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Demetri Mesimeris (Commack, N.Y./Commack) pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts to earn the win.
Concordia was led by Matt Rinaldi who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Connor Stapleton pitched 1.2 innings of relief to take the loss.
Mercy took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits. Sadallah led off the inning with a single and ended up on third after a stolen base and balk. Mooradian singled Sadallah home in the next at bat to make it 1-0. Mooradian later moved to third following a groundout and stolen base before Ortiz Sanchez brought him home with an RBI triple that gave Mercy a 2-0 lead. Ortiz Sanchez scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Concordia answered with three runs in the top of the second to make it 3-3. The Mavericks took the lead back in the bottom of the third when Ortiz Sanchez doubled and came around to score on a Garcia triple that made it 4-3.
Mercy increased the lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning with two runs. Mooradian got the scoring started with an RBI triple down the left field line that scored Sadallah to make it 5-3. Mooradian later scored following a Clipper error to give the Mavericks a three-run lead.
Concordia inched closer in the top of the sixth with two runs on three hits to bring the score to 6-5. The Mavericks added on a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-5. DeRosa led off the inning with a single and a later came around to score on a Sadallah ground-rule double which made it 7-5.
The Clippers scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game up at 7-7 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Saltzman led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but would end up getting out on a fielder's choice by Sadallah. Sadallah stole second and later stole third to put a runner on third with two outs. Murphy stepped up and on the first pitch of the bat delivered an RBI single past the first baseman, plating Sadallah to give Mercy the walk-off win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 15th when they host New Haven at 3 p.m.
