Sadallah Drives in Winning Run in 10th Inning as Baseball Defeats Queens, 3-2

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2019) – Powered by a walk-off RBI single from senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) in the 10th inning, the Mercy College baseball team earned a 3-2 victory over ECC foe Queens College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-12, 2-2 ECC) split the season series with the Knights (11-8-1, 2-2 ECC).

Sadallah went 2-for-5 with an RBI and senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Ethan McMenamy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 2-for-4. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) made the start on the mound and went the first seven innings with one earned run allowed and eight strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win.

Queens was led by Jesse Spellman who went 3-for-3. Jack Palma went 8.0 innings with two runs allowed and James McGee pitched 1.2 innings with a run allowed to take the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Queens took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Brian Watters fielder's choice that allowed Ron Linsalato to score. Mercy responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) led off the inning with a single and was brought home by a Garcia triple to center field that tied the game up at 1-1. Garcia later scored on a McMenamy sacrifice fly to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.

It remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth when the Knights plated a run to tie the game up at 2-2. Nick Font brought home Linsalato on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.

The score stayed tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the tenth. Ortiz Sanchez and McMenamy led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. After a pair of strikeouts made two outs in the inning, Sadallah stepped up in the clutch and delivered an RBI single to right field that scored Ortiz Sanchez for the winning run.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 26th when they play at Adelphi at 3:30 p.m.
