Murphy Records Walk-Off RBI Single in Ninth Inning to Give Baseball a 5-4 Victory Over RV NYIT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2019) – Powered by a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth from senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 5-4 victory over ECC foe RV NYIT on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (14-22, 6-10 ECC) earn a split of the four-game series against the Bears (22-8, 12-4 ECC).

Murphy went 3-for-4 with two RBI and junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-4. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) pitched 8.1 innings with three earned runs with four strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched 0.2 innings with no runs allowed to pick up the win.

NYIT was led by EJ Cumbo who went 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI. Moises Robles pitched 8.0 innings with three runs allowed to earn a no-decision. Ariel Taveras pitched 0.2 innings with two runs allowed to take the loss.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Jake Lebel RBI single. Mercy answered in the bottom of the first with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) reached on a hit by pitch and Mooradian singled to put runners on first and second. Murphy then singled to right field to score Sadallah to tie the game up. Mooradian later scored on a double play to give Mercy the lead.

Mercy took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second with a run on three hits. Freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) singled and Hagerty singled to put runners on first and third. Saltzman then singled to center field to score Dieguez.

NYIT inched closer with a run in the top of the fifth to make it 3-2. It remained 3-2 until the top of the ninth when Cumbo hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to right field which gave the Bears a 4-3 lead, heading to the bottom of the ninth.

After an out to lead off the inning, Hagerty singled and was pinch run for by Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln). A groundout moved Jocelyn over to second and Jocelyn later moved to third on a wild pitch. After a walk put runners on first and third, Mooradian delivered a game-tying RBI single to center field that scored Jocelyn. Murphy then singled to right field to score freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), giving Mercy the walk-off win in the ninth inning.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 16th when they face Bloomfield.
