Garcia and Grullart Record an RBI as Baseball Visits Molloy

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 3, 2019) – Despite an RBI from senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Friday afternoon at Mitchel Field.

The Mavericks (21-24-1, 13-12 ECC) see their six-game winning streak come to an end and are now in a tie for fourth in the ECC standings. The Lions (14-27, 11-14 ECC) move within two games of Mercy in the ECC standings.

Garcia and Grullart both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 2-for-3 and senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) both went 2-for-4. Junior James Jakuba (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Central Connecticut State University) pitched 7.0 innings with two earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Sean Hogan who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Timothy Panetta pitched 7.1 innings to earn the win. James Murphy pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.

After three scoreless innings, the Lions took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Hogan RBI single through the right side.

Molloy built the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when Hogan recorded a two-run single to center field.

Mercy battled back with two runs in the top of the eighth to make it 3-2. Mooradian singled and advanced to second on a balk. Murphy walked and Ortiz Sanchez singled to shortstop to load the bases. Garcia reached on a fielder's choice to score Mooradian, making it 3-1. Grullart then doubled down the left field line to score Murphy. A fly out to right field ended the inning with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

The Mavericks could not score in the top of the ninth leading to Molloy earning a 3-2 win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Molloy for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
