DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2019) – Despite a team-high two RBI from junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 7-3 and 3-1 decisions to ECC foe Molloy College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (21-26-1, 13-14 ECC) sit in a tie for fourth in the ECC standings and need to win tomorrow against the Lions (16-27, 13-14 ECC) to make the ECC Tournament.
Game 1: Molloy 7, Mercy 3
After two scoreless innings, the Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a hit and a Mercy error. It remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Molloy tacked on four more runs to make it 5-0.
Mercy battled back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to make it 5-2. Senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) walked and advanced to third after a Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) double. Grullart later singled to right center to score both Murphy and Ortiz Sanchez.
Molloy scored two more runs in the top of the eighth to build a 7-2 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-3. Senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) doubled and junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) followed with a double to plate Sadallah.
Mercy could not score in the ninth inning leading to Molloy taking game one.
Grullart went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Mooradian went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) pitched 5.0 innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss. Freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Molloy was led by Sean Hogan who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Joe Minucci pitched 7.0 innings to earn the win.
Game 2: Molloy 3, Mercy 1
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on one hit. Ortiz Sanchez walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) singled to put runners on first and third before sophomore Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) walked to load the bases. Senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Ortiz Sanchez to make it 1-0.
Molloy tied the game up in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-1. Mercy could not score in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings.
The game remained tied until the top of the 13th inning when Patrick Hoffman hit a home run to make it 2-1. James Messina made it 3-1 later in the inning with an RBI single to right center. Mercy could not score in the bottom of the 13th, giving Molloy the sweep.
Hagerty went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Jocelyn went 2-for-4. Murphy went 2-for-6 and senior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) pitched 8.0 innings with one run allowed to earn a no-decision. Junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched 4.2 innings with two runs allowed to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Hoffman who went 1-for-1 with a home run. James Murphy pitched the final 9.0 innings with no runs allowed to pick up the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Molloy at Mitchel Field at 1 p.m.
