Mercy College Athletics will release a Top-10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a recap every Monday and Friday for the next five weeks, culminating with the top moment from the 2018-19 athletic year being unveiled on Friday, July 26th.

No. 9 – Bryan Griffin Named First Team All-Met and First Team All-ECC

Coming in at No. 9 in our annual Top-10 is men's basketball redshirt sophomore Bryan Griffin who was named First Team All-Met and First Team All-ECC.

Griffin appeared in 24 games with 3.8 points per game as a redshirt freshman in 2017-18. The forward showed signs of his potential in the opening game of the 2018-19 season against Felician on November 12th when he had 18 points and four rebounds. The sophomore followed that up with 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting at Concordia on November 14th.

The forward recorded his first double-double of the season against Dominican on November 17th, finishing with 13 points and ten rebounds. Griffin followed that up with another double-double in the Mavericks win over Post on November 18th with 16 points and ten rebounds. Following the win over the Eagles, Griffin was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

The sophomore posted his third double-double in the Mavericks win over Nyack on November 28th, recording 13 points and 17 rebounds. Griffin continued his stretch of dominance with four more double-doubles in a row, highlighted by a 26-point, 12-rebound outing in Mercy's win over Queens on December 12th. During the stretch, Griffin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on December 3rd and was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week on December 10th. The sophomore also received Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention on December 11th. Following an 18-point, 16-rebound effort against Molloy on December 15th, Griffin was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week.

After not posting a double-double against Adelphi, Griffin went on to post three more double-doubles in a row against Pace, Bridgeport and Daemen. Against Bridgeport, the forward had 28 points and 17 rebounds on 12-of-19 shooting and later recorded 22 points and 17 rebounds as the Mavericks nearly upset nationally-ranked Daemen. The sophomore was named to the ECC Honor Roll two more times following these performances and took home MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention for a second time.

The forward continued to improve as the season went along and netted 23 points and 11 rebounds in the Mavericks win over NYIT on January 23rd. He later went on to post 31 points and 19 rebounds in another Mercy win against LIU Post on January 26th. After the back-to-back double-doubles, Griffin was named ECC Player and Defensive Player of the Week while also being named MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week.

The sophomore netted another double-double against St. Thomas Aquinas with 22 points and 12 rebounds before notching 30 points and 13 rebounds against District of Columbia on February 2nd. After those two outstanding performances, Griffin was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time and was named MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention for the fifth time.

Griffin picked up two more double-doubles at Queens (Feb. 13) and against Molloy (Feb. 16) leading to him being named to the ECC Honor Roll again and receiving MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention.

The sophomore went on to post a career-high 33 points and 23 rebounds on 14-of-22 shooting in the Mavericks win at LIU Post on February 23rd, which led to him being named ECC Co-Player of the Week and MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention.

Griffin ended his 2018-19 campaign with 26 points at Daemen and 19 points at Roberts Wesleyan. Following those two games, Griffin was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the sixth time.

The forward ended the season averaging 20.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game and led the team with 64 blocks. Griffin shot 55.9 percent from the floor (No. 4 in ECC) and led the ECC shooting 46.0 percent from beyond the arc. The sophomore set a new single-season school record with 300 rebounds and led the ECC in rebounds. Griffin was second in the ECC blocks, third in scoring and ranked in the top five in Division II in rebounds per game and double-doubles. All of these accolades led to the sophomore being named First Team All-ECC, First Team All-Met and NABC East All-District Second Team.

Griffin returns for another season in Dobbs Ferry in 2019-20 and the future looks bright for the Mavericks entering the third season under Head Coach Michael Maczko.
