MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 13, 2019) – Despite a goal from senior Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) and a career-high 19 saves from sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to NE10 foe Southern New Hampshire University on Friday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Mavericks (0-3, 0-2 NE10) have dropped three games in a row, while the Penmen (3-1, 1-0 NE10) have won three straight games.
Anderson scored her first goal of the season and freshman Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) had a team-high two shots on goal. Viscione made a career-high 19 saves to take the loss.
Southern New Hampshire received two goals from Emily Campbell and a goal apiece from Laura van der Doorn, Taylor Marchman and Helene Servais. Melanie Rennie made two saves to earn the win.
Viscione made four saves in the first 13 minutes of the game before the Penmen scored in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Marchman scored following a rebound of a Campbell shot to give the Penmen the lead. The score remained 1-0 heading into the second quarter of play.
The score stayed 1-0 until the 21st minute when Campbell scored following a pass from Servais which made it 2-0. Viscione made five more saves in the second quarter to keep the score at 2-0 heading into halftime.
Viscione stopped five more shots in the third quarter to keep the Mavericks within striking distance at 2-0 after three quarters of play.
The Penmen scored in the 48th minute to make it 3-0 following a van der Doorn goal. Just over a minute later, Southern New Hampshire scored again to increase the lead to 4-0 after a Servais goal. Mercy continued to battle and got on the board in the 49th minute when Anderson put home a rebound of a Sherry shot that was stopped by Rennie to make it 4-1. The Penmen scored their final goal in the 52nd minute when Campbell scored again off a Meaghan Wile assist to make it 5-1.
Southern New Hampshire held a 35-4 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
