DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2019) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute from freshman Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over 2018 NCAA Tournament Final Four participant Pace University in a Northeast-10 matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-3, 1-2 NE10) pick up their first win of the season and first-ever NE10 victory, while the Setters (0-3, 0-2 NE10) remain winless and drop their first-ever game to Mercy.
Sherry scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) added an assist. Senior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had a defensive save and sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made a game-high 14 saves to earn her first collegiate win.
Pace was led by Danielle Merante who had a game-high five shots and Grace Henderson made six saves to take the loss.
The opening quarter saw the Setters hold an 8-3 edge in shots, but Viscione made six saves in the period to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.
Viscione made two more stops in the second quarter to keep Pace off the board and the teams headed into halftime tied at 0-0.
The Mavericks got on the board quick in the third quarter, scoring in the 32nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took a penalty corner and Smith took a shot from just inside the circle that was deflected in by Sherry to give Mercy the lead. Smith came right back with another shot but Henderson made the save to keep the game at 1-0 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw Pace hold a 7-2 edge in shots, but Viscione made six more saves and Podskoch added a defensive save to give the Mavericks the shutout win.
Pace held a 23-7 edge in shots and an 18-7 edge in penalty corners.
