DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2019) – Despite a goal from senior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and 16 saves from sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 7-1 decision to Northeast-10 foe Assumption College in a CODA Awareness Game on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-4, 1-3 NE10) fail to build off their win over Pace on Tuesday, while the Greyhounds (4-1, 2-1 NE10) bounce back from their first loss of the season.
Podskoch scored on her lone shot on goal and Viscione made 16 saves to take the loss. Sophomore Briannagh Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) had a team-high two shots on goal.
Assumption was led by Deirdre Burchill who had a goal and two assists. Kathleen Smiley made four saves to earn the win.
The visitors scored just 35 seconds into the game when Sam Tepper found Burchill who put the ball into the cage to make it 1-0. Assumption made it 2-0 in the 8th minute when Summer Walsh scored following a pass from Burchill. Jennifer Beardsley concluded the scoring in the first quarter with a goal in the 13th minute to make it 3-0.
McKenzie Patterson made it 4-0 in the 20th minute off an assist from Shannon Quinlan. The Greyhounds ended the scoring in the first half when Paige Laverriere scored to make it 5-0 heading into halftime.
Lucy Malia increased the Assumption lead to 6-0 following a penalty stroke goal and Lily Daly gave the Greyhounds a 7-0 lead in the final seconds of the third quarter.
Mercy continued to battle in the fourth quarter and the Mavericks drew an Assumption foul that led to a penalty stroke attempt. Podskoch finished off the attempt to get Mercy on the board. The Mavericks outshot Assumption 5-1 in the fourth quarter, but could not score again.
Assumption held a 26-7 edge in shots and penalty corners were tied at 8-8.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 25th when they play at Molloy at 4 p.m.
