Griffin Records Double-Double as Men's Basketball Visits New York Tech

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2020) – Despite a double-double from redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 75-51 decision to ECC foe New York Tech on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks (3-11, 1-3 ECC) have dropped two games in a row, while the Bears (2-13, 1-3 ECC) snap a five-game losing streak.

Griffin recorded a team-high ten points on 4-of-9 shooting with a game-high 18 rebounds and three blocks. Junior Nakeem Hamilton (Bronx, N.Y./Hostos CC) had nine points and sophomore Dondre Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./South Atlanta) had seven points and two assists. Senior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) and freshman Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) both netted six points.

New York Tech was led by Opong Bramble who had a game-high 22 points with 14 rebounds.

An Amadou Camara (Harlem, N.Y./Monroe College) jumper at the 16:00 mark cut the Bears lead to 5-4. The Bears ensued with a 12-1 run to take a 17-5 lead with 10:37 left in the opening half. A Wilson layup with 6:05 on the clock got the Mavericks to within eight, 20-12, but New York Tech closed the half on a 17-8 run to take a 37-20 lead at halftime.

The Bears opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take a 50-24 lead with 15:23 left to play. The hosts later held a 56-33 lead with 9:34 remaining before Mercy went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 16, 56-40, with 7:55 on the clock. New York Tech answered right back with a three on the next possession and went on a 7-0 run of their own to increase the lead back to 23, 63-40, with 6:08 remaining. The Bears led by more than 20 points for the remainder of the game to secure the win.

Mercy shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from downtown and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the foul line. New York Tech shot 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field, 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the charity stripe. New York Tech held a 41-36 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 11th when they host District of Columbia at 2 p.m.
