Mav Spotlight: Miguel Ortiz Sanchez, Baseball

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the fall semester we'll be bringing you "Mav Spotlight" profiles of current Mercy student-athletes as we learn more about our athletes outside of their sport. Today we feature baseball graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez.

Quick Bio

Ortiz Sanchez, a Bronx, New York native, is in his graduate year at Mercy, where he majors in Business Administration. The graduate student has appeared in 106 games in three seasons and has 116 hits, 65 RBI, 55 runs scored and 26 doubles in 380 at bats. In 2020, he was named ECC Player of the Week once and NCWBA East Region Hitter of the Week once. Ortiz Sanchez led the ECC in average in 2020 with a .455 mark and led team in RBI with 14.

Getting to Know Miguel

Q: Who or what inspired you to play sports?

A: What inspired me to play sports is my family, school and the desire to fulfill my dream of playing professional baseball.

Q: What is your favorite sport memory at Mercy College?

A: My favorite sport memory at Mercy College is having back-to-back 20+ win seasons.

Q: What is your biggest accomplishment on or off the field?

A: My biggest accomplishment on the field is to work hard and do as much as I can to help my team win and off the field is to do everything the right way either in class or in the community.  

Q: Do you have any pregame superstitions?

A: I do not have any pregame superstitions.

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

A: If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life it would be "the Dominican flag" (rice, beans and chicken).

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

A: If I could have a superpower I would like it to be able to make dreams come true because there is a lot of people that have dreams and because of one reason or another they cannot make it happen.

Q: What is your favorite movie or TV show?

A: My favorite TV show is MLB Tonight.

Q: What is your major and what do you want to do with it?

A: My major is Business Administration and I would like to start and administrate my own business.

Q: What do you hope to do when your playing days are over?

A: I hope to start working in my field, probably coach on weekends and play softball in my free time.

Q: What is your favorite social media app?

A: My favorite social media app is Instagram.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

A: My favorite hobby is to play softball and spend time with family and friends.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete?

A: My favorite athlete is LeBron James.

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team?

A: My favorite professional sports team is the New York Yankees.

Q: Who are your favorite musicians?

A: My favorite musician is Ricardo Arjona.

Q: Who is the teammate you are closest with and what do enjoy doing together?

A: The teammate I am closest with is Francisco Paulino and I enjoy playing dominoes with him.

Q: What is your favorite meal from the café?

A: My favorite meal from the café is the crispy chicken quesadilla.
