Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy opened the 2020 season with four games at Barton College on Saturday and Sunday. The Mavericks went 1-3 with a split on Saturday. Mercy was led by graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez who batted .500 with eight hits, including his 100th career hit, and three RBI. Graduate student Anthony Murphy produced a team-high two home runs and five RBI and senior John Mooradian recorded four hits and three RBI. Mooradian set a new school record for career triples in game one on Sunday and recorded his 100th career run in the nightcap. Junior Jack Kelly pitched 6.1 innings with three earned runs allowed to pick up the win in game two at Barton on Saturday. Junior Osvaldo Encarnacion and freshman Ryan Dieguez have combined to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen this season.
Scouting the Wolves
Newberry has won ten of their first 11 games with their lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Nova Southeastern on Saturday. The Wolves went 41-16 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Newberry was picked second in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll after winning its first-ever regular season championship. Newberry had seven named preseason All-Conference led by Colin Allman who is batting .400 with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored. Zane Tarrance is hitting .387 with five RBI and five runs scored and Luke Orr is hitting .310 with six RBI and a home run. The pitching staff is led by Tomas Sorcia Jr. who has a team-best 1.02 ERA with a team-high 26 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. Quinton Driggers is 4-0 on the mound with a 1.17 ERA in 15.1 innings.
