DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2020) – Despite a team-high 16 points from freshman Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped an 87-59 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Wednesday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (5-19, 3-11 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Lions (9-14, 6-7 ECC) snap a four-game losing streak.
Wilson went 6-for-11 from the floor and had four rebounds. Redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Griffin set a new single-season school record for rebounds, surpassing his own record of 300 set last season. He currently has 306 rebounds this season with two games to play. Freshman Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) netted eight points and senior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) had seven points.
Molloy was led by Nick Corbett who had a game-high 26 points.
The Lions jumped out to a 9-2 lead before a Kirkland three made it 9-5 at the 16:50 mark of the first half. Molloy answered with a 9-2 run to increase the lead to 11, 18-7, with 11:11 on the clock. Another Kirkland three with 6:17 on the clock got the Mavericks to within eight, 25-17, with 6:17 left in the half. Molloy closed the half on a 23-8 run to head into halftime with a 48-25 advantage.
Molloy started the second half by increasing the lead to 27, 59-32, with 15:06 left in the game following a James Montgomery free throw. A Williams Jr. three made it 59-35, but the visitors went on a 12-2 run to build a game-high 34-point lead, 71-37, with 11:56 remaining.
The Lions led by double figures for the remainder of the contest to secure the win.
Mercy shot 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor, 18.2 percent (4-for-22) from downtown and 75.0 percent (15-for-20) from the foul line. Molloy shot 50.0 percent (32-for-64) from the field, 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from beyond the arc and 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 44-28 edge on the glass.
