Game Preview: Baseball Hosts Bloomfield on Thursday in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2020) – The Mercy College baseball team resumes action on Thursday, February 27th when they host Bloomfield College.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy enters Thursday's game on a seven-game losing streak and is coming off an 11-9 loss against Franklin Pierce on Saturday. The Mavericks are looking to win their first game over Bloomfield in program history. Mercy is currently led one-time ECC Player of the Week and NCBWA East Region Hitter of the Week Miguel Ortiz Sanchez who is batting a team-high .471 with a team-high 16 hits, eight RBI and two doubles. The graduate student also has three stolen bases and a team-high .676 slugging percentage. Graduate student Anthony Murphy is batting .286 with a team-high three home runs. The first baseman also has six RBI and five runs scored. Senior John Mooradian is also hitting .286 with five RBI, a home run and three stolen bases. Freshman Nolan Giblin is batting .278 with one RBI and five hits on the year. The pitching staff is led by junior Jack Kelly who has a team-best 2.38 ERA with a 1-1 record and 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings. Senior James Jakuba has a team-high 14 strikeouts in 10.2 innings in two starts.

Scouting the Bears

Bloomfield is opening their 2020 season against the Mavericks after going 16-36-1 last season. The Bears qualified for the CACC Tournament last season and are picked third in the CACC South Division Coaches' Poll. Bloomfield returns the CACC Rookie of the Year and East Region Preseason All-Region selection Tyree Bradley who batted .341 with 38 RBI, nine home runs, 14 doubles and 32 runs. Senior Darwin Tavarez also returns after recording 42 RBI, eight home runs, three triples and 29 runs. Senior Kendon Strachan returns after hitting .313 with 55 hits, 17 doubles, 27 RBI and 40 runs scored. Sophomore Wilfrido Valenzuela leads the pitching staff after going 4-2 last season with a 3.00 ERA and team-high 74 strikeouts in 63.0 innings. Senior Christian Camilo posted a 4.32 ERA in 41.2 innings last season with 37 strikeouts.
