Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 5-4 win over Bloomfield on Thursday, February 27th in their home opener. The Mavericks are looking to start 3-0 at home for the first time since 2014. Mercy has been led by one-time ECC Player of the Week and NCBWA East Region Hitter of the Week graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez who is batting a team-high .432 with a team-high nine RBI and 16 hits. Senior John Mooradian is a one-time ECC Honor Roll recipient and is hitting .308 with six RBI and a team-high nine runs scored. One-time ECC Honor Roll recipient graduate student Anthony Murphy has a team-high three home runs with eight RBI and a .263 average. Sophomore Nikko Liguori was named to the ECC Honor Roll this week and is hitting .263 with two RBI and five runs scored. Junior Jack Kelly was named ECC Pitcher of the Week earlier this week and has a team-best 1.65 ERA with a team-high two wins in 16.1 innings with 17 strikeouts. Senior James Jakuba has made three starts on the mound and has a team-high 19 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched. Senior Andrew Hernandez has appeared in three games out of the bullpen and has one save in 6.2 innings.
Scouting the Dolphins
Staten Island is making the transition toward full Division II membership and will join the ECC next season. The Dolphins are currently on a two-game losing streak and are coming off 16-2 and 22-1 losses to Erskine College on Monday. CSI went 16-22 last season and qualified for the CUNYAC Postseason Championship. The Dolphins are led at the plate by Steven Collica who is batting a team-high .750 with two RBI and two runs scored. Peter Lombardo and Andrew Nathan both have a team-high eight RBI and Lombardo is hitting .429 on the year. Giacchino Virone has seven RBI and is hitting .571 in 14 at bats. The pitching staff is led by Nick Metzger who is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 6.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts. John Esposito is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and Adam Gonzalez has a team-high seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
