Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 17-8 win over RV Lake Erie on Sunday and is currently ranked No. 8 in the USILA poll. The Mavericks are looking to defeat a nationally-ranked opponent for the fifth time since the start of the 2019 season. Mercy is 3-2 all-time against the Setters with the last win coming on February 21, 2015. The Mavericks have been led by ECC Offensive Player of the Week junior Dominic Scorcia who had a school-record nine goals and 14 points in the win over Lake Erie. He has a team-high 18 goals, 11 assists and 29 points on the year. Sophomore Brady Kearnan is a one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week and is second on the team with 13 goals, nine assists and 22 points. Junior Marty Shargel is third on the team with 12 goals and one-time ECC Rookie of the Week TJ Heyder has five goals and seven assists. Senior Antonio Rey is a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and set a school-record with 25 faceoffs won in the win over Lake Erie. He has a team-high 38 ground balls and has a 73.4 faceoff percentage. Senior Kyle Gardner has a team-high eight caused turnovers with ten ground balls and sophomore Thomas Umano is 3-1 in goal with 29 saves and a .569 save percentage. Sophomore Joe Tortorella has made 22 saves in 90 minutes of action with a .710 save percentage.
Scouting the Setters
Pace opened their 2020 season on February 22nd with a 19-4 win over Dominican. The Setters went 13-4 last season and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the NE10 Tournament falling in the semifinals to Adelphi. Pace last made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and were picked to finish third in the NE10 Conference Coaches' Poll. The Setters were led in their opener by Joseph Diggle who had a team-high six points on two goals and four assists. Alan Singleton and Jake Veres both added three goals and two assists and Bruno Surace had three goals. The defense was led by Daniel Lewis who had a team-high four caused turnovers and an assist and goalkeeper Louis Ragusa made seven saves in 45 minutes of action to pick up the win over the Chargers. Lewis was an USILA All-America Honorable Mention and NE10 First Team All-Conference selection in 2019 and Ragusa was named NE10 Rookie of the Year.
