GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2021) – Despite a goal from freshman Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and a game-high 16 saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 7-1 decision to NE10 foe No. 9 Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (2-9, 1-7 NE10) have dropped four games in a row, while the Panthers (7-4, 5-3 NE10) have won four games in a row.
Volz recorded her second goal of the season and Viscione made 16 saves to take the loss. Freshman Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made four saves in 20 minutes of action in her first collegiate appearance.
Adelphi was led by Amanda Lee who had three goals. Amanda Montiel made four saves to earn the win.
The Panthers had a great chance in just the 5th minute of action, but Viscione stopped a Jackie Brown penalty stroke to keep it 0-0. Viscione made two more saves before Adelphi scored in the 11th minute on a Morgan Minicozzi goal to make it 1-0. Viscione made two more saves in the period to keep the score at 1-0 after the first quarter.
Adelphi opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals in the first one minute and 30 seconds of the quarter to take a 3-0 lead. Viscione made three more stops in the period to keep the Panthers lead at 3-0 heading into halftime.
The Panthers exploded for four goals in the third quarter to take a 7-0 lead after three quarters of play.
Giordano made her first four collegiate saves in the fourth quarter to keep Adelphi from scoring again in the period. Volz connected on a penalty stroke in the 54th minute to break the shutout. Volz looked for another goal in the 57th minute but her shot hit the post.
Adelphi held a 39-7 edge in shots and a 21-5 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 16th when they host Franklin Pierce for Senior Day at 11 a.m.
