DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2021) – Despite a game-high 15 saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to NE10 foe No. 4 Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-10, 3-8 NE10) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Greyhounds (15-1, 12-0 NE10) have won 15 straight games.
Viscione made a game-high 15 saves to take the loss and sophomore Rory McComb (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) recorded the team's lone shot on goal.
Assumption was led by Deirdre Burchill who had a game-high two goals. Kylie Gargiulo made one save to earn the win.
Viscione made three early saves before Mia Salah scored in the 10th minute to give Assumption a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks held the No. 4 team in the country to just one goal in the first quarter, trailing 1-0 at the end of the quarter.
Burchill made it 2-0 in the 21st minute with her first goal of the day. Viscione made two more saves to close out the half and Mercy trailed just 2-0 at halftime.
The Greyhounds scored less than a minute into the second half with Burchill scoring again to make it 3-0. Isabel Primack later made it 4-0 in the 38th minute and Assumption headed into the fourth quarter up 4-0.
McKenzie Patterson scored the final Assumption goal in the 48th minute to make it 5-0. Viscione made four more stops to close out the game, limiting the Assumption offense to five goals.
Assumption held a 31-1 edge in shots and a 17-0 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 26th when they play at New Haven at 7 p.m.
