DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2021) – Despite a goal from sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to NE10 foe Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-12, 3-10 NE10) have dropped three games in a row, while the Penmen (5-11, 5-8 NE10) have won two games in a row.
Schreck now has a team-high six goals and 15 points on the year. Sophomore Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) dished out her third assist of the season. Freshman Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made her first collegiate start in goal and made three saves to take the loss.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Annemartine Christis and Taylor Marchman who both scored. Kate Pigsley made four saves to earn the win.
The Penmen struck first in just the second minute of action when Marchman scored following an assist by Emily Campbell, which gave the guests a 1-0 lead. Pigsley made three saves and Sofie Wolters made two defensive saves to keep Mercy from scoring in the first quarter.
Christis made it 2-0 in favor of Southern New Hampshire in the 18th minute of action. Schreck answered less than 30 seconds later following a pass from Fitzgerald, which got the Mavericks to within one, 2-1. The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime.
The teams combined for just five shots in the second half and Mercy could not find the equalizer.
Mercy held a 9-8 edge in shots and 10-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 30th when they play at Saint Michael's at 11:30 a.m.
