DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2021) – Despite a goal from graduate student Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and eight saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to NE10 foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-7, 1-5 NE10) have dropped two games in a row and fall to the Spartans (2-7, 1-4 NE10) for the second time this season.
Cotton now has a team-high three goals and sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) recorded her first collegiate assist. Sophomore Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) posted her first career defensive save and Viscione stopped eight shots to take the loss.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Nicola Van Vuuren who had two goals. Jessie Hohenstein made four saves to earn the win.
Both goalies made a save in the opening quarter to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.
Viscione made another save in the 23rd minute followed by a Devlin defensive save to keep the game scoreless. The Spartans finally broke through in the 27th minute on Van Vuuren's first goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Hohenstein made a save late in the quarter and Noortje Luijten made a defensive save to keep the Spartans ahead 1-0 at halftime.
Viscione made another stop to begin the third quarter. Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the 35th minute when Schreck sent a cross from the right side and Cotton fired the ball into the cage to tie the game.
The score remained 1-1 after three quarters of play with the Mavericks forcing Hohenstein to make two more saves in the period.
Viscione made four more saves in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied at 1-1 after regulation, sending the game into overtime.
The Spartans would score the game-winning goal in the 65th minute when Van Vuuren beat Viscione 1v1 to give St. Thomas Aquinas the 2-1 win in overtime.
St. Thomas Aquinas held a 16-8 edge in shots and a 14-6 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 9th when they play at No. 8 Saint Anselm at 1 p.m.
