Viscione Makes Game-High 13 Saves as Field Hockey Battles No. 8 Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Oct. 9, 2021) – Despite a game-high 13 saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a narrow 2-0 decision to No. 8 Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.

The Mavericks (2-8, 1-6 NE10) have dropped three games in a row, while the Hawks (9-3, 7-2 NE10) have won two straight games.

Viscione made 13 saves and surrendered just two goals. Graduate student Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) recorded a shot on goal.

Saint Anselm was led by Carly Lacasse and Avery Tucker who scored. Mackenzie McConnell made one save to earn the win.

Mercy held its own against the nationally-ranked Hawks in the first quarter, allowing just one shot, to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.

Viscione stepped up and made seven saves in the second quarter to keep Saint Anselm off the scoreboard and the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.

The Mavericks held the nationally-ranked Hawks scoreless until the 33rd minute when Lacasse scored off an assist from Avery Tucker to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the third quarter with Viscione making three more saves in the period.

Saint Anselm added an insurance goal in the 48th minute when Tucker scored to make it 2-0. Viscione made three more saves in the frame to keep it just a two-goal game. The Hawks held on for the win despite Mercy giving them all they could handle.

Saint Anselm held a 24-1 edge in shots and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 12th when they play at Adelphi 7 p.m.
