Game Preview: No. 9 Men's Lacrosse Plays at RV Georgian Court on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 12, 2021) – The No. 9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team play at RV Georgian Court on Saturday, March 13th at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Saturday's game marks the first game for the Mavericks on the road since February 22, 2020 due to COVID-19. 
  • Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Sean Rigley was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 5-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 18-2 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance with their first win.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 9 in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
  • Mercy looks to win their first road game of the season for the third straight season.
  • Mercy is 12-5 in their last 17 road games dating back to 2018.
  • Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last five seasons the tournament was held.
  • The Mavericks are 5-0 all-time against Georgian Court with the series dating back to 2016. The two teams have played each other each season since 2016 and will face off twice this season. Mercy has won all but one of the previous five meetings by double-digit goals.
  • Mercy is looking to start 2-0 for the third straight year and are 24-3 over their last 27 games going back to the start of the 2019 season.
  • Senior Dominic Scorcia led the way for the Mavericks in their season-opening win over Dominican last Friday and was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week and was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll. He had a game-high six points on two goals and four assists.
  • Junior Brady Kearnan also had a strong opening game, recording a game-high-tying three goals with two assists and four ground balls. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll following the game.
  • Junior Jack Gibbons also had three goals and two assists in the victory. Graduate student Tommy McPartland had two goals and one assist in the opener and is one goal shy of 100 for his career. He would become the fifth Maverick to reach the mark.
  • The Mavericks defense allowed just six goals in the 19-6 win over Dominican and were led by Rigley, graduate student Bobby Norton and sophomore Justin Gerdvil who combined for two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Tommy Umano made eight saves in 35:35 minutes of action to pick up the win against the Chargers.
  • Graduate student Antonio Rey had a strong outing in the face-off circle for the Mavericks going 14-for-19 with a game-high eight ground balls along with a goal.
  • Kearnan, McPartland, Gibbons, Rey and Rigley all received Preseason All-American honors from the USILA.
  • The Mavericks currently rank among the nation's leaders in assists (No. 5 nationally), face-off winning percentage (No. 4), points per game (No. 3), scoring defense (No. 5), scoring margin (No. 3), scoring offense (No. 3) and shot percentage (No. 2).
Scouting the Lions
  • Georgian Court was picked second in the CACC Preseason Poll after winning the CACC Championship in 2018 and 2019. The Lions have opened their season with wins over Lake Erie and Molloy.
  • The Lions went 4-5 during the shortened season in 2020 but went 10-8 during their last full season in 2019 and 11-6 in 2018.
  • Georgian Court's program dates back to 2016 and Mickey Hover has been the head coach for all six seasons.
  • In the teams' last meeting on February 15, 2020, the Mavericks came away with an 19-8 win in Dobbs Ferry.
  • The Lions are looking to start 3-0 for the first time in program history. Their current 2-0 start is the best in school history.
  • In their last game against Molloy, Georgian Court earned a 12-7 win on the road on Wednesday. The Lions were led by Randy Collins who had a game-high five goals and Austin Geissel made 13 saves to earn the win.
  • Georgian Court is led on the season by Daniel Burnham who has a team-high nine points on five goals and four assists with nine ground balls in two games. One-time CACC Player of the Week and one-time USILA Team of the Week recipient Devin Bell has five goals in two games and Collins has six points on the year on five goals and one assist.
  • Billy Germana leads the Lions in the face-off circle, winning 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of his face-offs so far this year. JD Warren also has a team-high-tying nine ground balls. 2019 CACC Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year Austin Geissel is back in net and is 2-0 with 30 saves, a .667 save percentage and 7.50 goals against average in the two games this year. He was named CACC Goalkeeper of the Week on March 1st.
  • Tallen Smith is a one-time CACC Rookie of the Week this season and has four goals and two assists on the year.

Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, March 17th when they play at Molloy at 7 p.m.
