Game Preview: Baseball Hosts RV Adelphi on Sunday

Scouting the Mavericks
  • The Mavericks are coming off a 3-0 win in their season opener on Friday against Bloomfield. Mercy was led by sophomore Anthony Burgio who pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win.
  • Mercy earned their first shutout since March 17, 2019 when they defeated New Haven, 2-0, at Mercy Field.
  • Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy looks to start 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
  • Mercy is 4-24-1 against Adelphi dating back to 2002. The Mavericks last win in the series came on February 26, 2011.
  • Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
  • In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
  • Mercy last posted a winning record in 1990.
  • The program record for wins in a season is 26 set in 1990.
  • Mercy looks to start 2-0 at home for the second straight season.
  • Burgio pitched a career-high seven innings with a career-high seven strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win on Friday against Bloomfield. Freshman Luis Ruiz pitched the final two innings without allowing a run with three strikeouts to earn his first collegiate save in his collegiate debut.
  • Juniors Nikko Liguori and Charles Lebron led the offense for the Mavericks. Both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Liguori had a double. Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a double and junior Ryan Saltzman went 1-for-3.
  • Scoring the Mavericks runs were graduate student Anthony Murphy, senior Robert Wootten and sophomore Justin Glennerster. Murphy is currently 44 hits shy of setting a school record for career hits. He is also eight RBI shy of setting a school record for career RBI. Murphy currently has 167 hits and 116 RBI as a Maverick.
Scouting the Panthers
  • Adelphi was picked first in the Southwest Division of the NE10 Preseason Poll.
  • The Panthers are the defending NE10 Southwest Division regular season champions after going a program-best 22-2-1 in NE10 play during the 2019 season.
  • Adelphi went 4-5 during the shortened season but went 34-9-1 during their last full season in 2019, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Panthers have made the NCAA Tournament five times during head coach Dom Scala's 17 seasons at the helm.
  • Adelphi was picked third in the NCBWA Preseason East Region Poll and is currently receiving votes in the national poll.
  • In the teams' last meeting on April 3, 2019, Adelphi came away with a 23-9 win at Mercy Field.
  • Adelphi opened their season on Thursday at Felician with a convincing 15-0 win. The Panthers also played Saturday against Pace and lost the first game, 11-6, before earning a 5-2 win in game two.
  • Leading the Panthers in the early going is Matt Alifano who is batting a team-high .636 (7-for-11) with a team-high five RBI. He also has four runs scored and four doubles with a team-best 1.000 slugging percentage.
  • Anthony Cipri is second on the team with a .500 average and is leading the team with six runs scored in 12 at bats. Cooper Johnson is hitting .444 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Tom Ambrosino made the start on the mound on Thursday and tossed four shutout innings with five strikeouts. Michael Storms has pitched 1.2 innings of relief and earned the save in the Panthers game two win over Pace on Saturday.
  • Steven Murphy pitched an inning of relief against Felician on Thursday to pick up the win.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Tuesday, March 16th when they play at Caldwell at 3 p.m.
