Game Preview: No. 8 Men's Lacrosse Plays at Molloy on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2021) – The No. 8 Mercy College men's lacrosse team plays at RV Molloy College on Wednesday, March 17th at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off a 17-4 win over Georgian Court on Saturday. Junior Brady Kearnan had a game-high six points on three goals and three assists.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Sean Rigley was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 5-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 18-2 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance with their first win.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 8 in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
  • Mercy is 13-5 in their last 18 road games dating back to 2018.
  • Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last five seasons the tournament was held.
  • The Mavericks are 9-1 all-time against Molloy with the series dating back to 2010. Molloy won the series first meeting in 2010 but Mercy has won the last nine meetings.
  • Mercy is looking to start 3-0 for the first time since 2019 and are 25-3 over their last 28 games going back to the start of the 2019 season.
  • Kearnan has a team-high 11 points on the year on six goals and five assists to go along with eight ground balls. The junior was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after posting a game-high six points on three goals and three assists at Georgian Court.
  • Senior Dominic Scorcia is second on the team with 10 points on four goals and a team-high six assists. He has seven ground balls and was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week last week.
  • Junior Jack Gibbons and sophomore TJ Heyder were named to the ECC Honor Roll after combining for seven points on six goals and one assist. Graduate student Tommy McPartland has six points on the year on three goals and three assists and recorded his 100th career goal on Saturday. He became just the fifth Maverick to reach the milestone.
  • The Mavericks defense allowed just four goals in the 17-4 win over Georgian Court and were led by junior Jack Kipnes, senior Joseph Guglielmo and sophomore Justin Gerdvil who combined for six caused turnovers. Junior Tommy Umano made four saves in 48:30 minutes of action to pick up the win against the Lions. Umano currently leads Division II in goals against average (2.85) and is second in save percentage (.750).
  • Graduate student Antonio Rey had a strong outing in the face-off circle for the Mavericks going 15-for-16 with a game-high 11 ground balls along with a goal. He was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week following the game. Rey currently leads Division II with an 82.9 face-off win percentage.
  • Kearnan, McPartland, Gibbons, Rey and Rigley all received Preseason All-American honors from the USILA.
  • The Mavericks currently rank among the nation's leaders in assists (No. 4 nationally), face-off winning percentage (No. 2), points per game (No. 3), scoring defense (No. 2), scoring margin (No. 3), scoring offense (No. 3) and ground balls per game (No. 1).
Scouting the Lions
  • Molloy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 1-6 during the shortened season in 2020. The Lions lone win in 2020 came over Southern N.H.
  • The Lions went 7-8 during their last full season in 2019 and last had a winning record in 2018 when they went 9-7.
  • Molloy last qualified for the ECC Tournament in 2018 when they fell in the Semifinals.
  • The Lions have played all four of their previous games this season at home going 1-3. Molloy is coming off a 13-9 loss to Chestnut Hill on Saturday.
  • Molloy is receiving votes in the latest USILA Poll.
  • In the teams' last meeting on March 23, 2019, the Mavericks came away with a 15-6 win in Dobbs Ferry.
  • In their last game against Chestnut Hill, Molloy was led by Nick Del Giorno who had a team-high three goals. Adam Hyman made 11 saves in the loss.
  • Molloy has been led by freshman Jason Rebaudo who has a team-high 13 points on five goals and eight assists. He also has seven ground balls and was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday. Sophomore Sean Plasencia is second on the team with 10 points on a team-high-tying seven goals to go along with three assists. He also has nine ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Nick Del Giorno also has a team-high seven goals and has a total of nine points on the year.
  • Junior Jordan Arbouet has a team-high seven caused turnovers and freshman Denver Tveter has a team-high-tying 11 ground balls with six caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Thomas Mauro leads the Lions in the face-off circle. He is 15-40 (.375) on face-offs and freshman Hunter Irving is 10-28 (.357).
  • Hyman is 1-3 in goal this season with 42 saves and a .467 save percentage.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Saturday, March 20th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
