Game Preview: No. 8 Men's Lacrosse Hosts RV Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2021) – The No. 8 Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts RV Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 20th at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off a 16-7 win over Molloy on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Brady Kearnan who had a game-high four goals.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Sean Rigley was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 5-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 18-2 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance with their first win.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 8 in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
  • Mercy is 17-1 in their last 18 home games with the lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst on April 13, 2019.
  • Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last five seasons the tournament was held.
  • The Mavericks are 8-0 all-time against the Redhawks with the series dating back to 2013.
  • Mercy is looking to start 4-0 for the first time since 2019 and are 26-3 over their last 29 games going back to the start of the 2019 season.
  • Kearnan has a team-high 16 points on the year on 10 goals and six assists to go along with 10 ground balls. The junior was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after posting a game-high six points on three goals and three assists at Georgian Court.
  • Senior Dominic Scorcia is second on the team with 15 points on six goals and a team-high nine assists. He has 11 ground balls and was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week last week.
  • Junior Jack Gibbons and sophomore TJ Heyder were named to the ECC Honor Roll after combining for seven points on six goals and one assist. Gibbons is third on the team with 12 points on six goals and six assists and Heyder has seven goals and one assist. Graduate student Tommy McPartland has seven points on the year on four goals and three assists and recorded his 100th career goal on Saturday. He became just the fifth Maverick to reach the milestone.
  • The defense is led by graduate student Bobby Norton and junior Jake Fitzgerald who both had a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior Jack Kipnes has nine ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Justin Gerdvil has seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Tommy Umano is 3-0 in goal with 17 saves. Umano currently is second in Division II in goals against average (4.65) and is fifth in save percentage (.607).
  • Graduate student Antonio Rey was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the USILA Team of the Week this week. He went 23-26 on face-offs with a career-high 13 ground balls at Molloy on Wednesday. Rey leads Division II with a .852 face-off win percentage.
  • Kearnan, McPartland, Gibbons, Rey and Rigley all received Preseason All-American honors from the USILA.
  • The Mavericks currently rank among the nation's leaders in assists (No. 5 nationally), face-off winning percentage (No. 1), points per game (No. 5), scoring defense (No. 4), scoring margin (No. 3), scoring offense (No. 3) and ground balls per game (No. 1).
Scouting the Redhawks
  • Roberts Wesleyan is coming off a 19-4 loss to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst last Saturday. The Redhawks were led by Jordon Deats who had a team-high two goals.
  • Roberts Wesleyan was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 4-3 during the shortened season in 2020.
  • The Redhawks went 7-8 during their last full season in 2019 and made the ECC Tournament. In the ECC Semifinals, Roberts Wesleyan faced off against Mercy in Dobbs Ferry and the Mavericks came away with a 16-2 win.
  • Roberts Wesleyan's program dates back to 2012 and last year was their first time finishing above .500.
  • The Redhawks are 3-0 on the road this year, defeating Walsh, Alderson Broaddus and Wheeling.
  • Roberts Wesleyan is receiving votes in the latest USILA Poll.
  • Roberts Wesleyan has been led by two-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week senior Hunter Lemieux who has a team-high 23 goals and 25 points with 11 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Matt Gademske is second on the team with 21 points by way of 14 goals and seven assists. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Jordon Deats is third on the team with 12 points on eight goals and four assists.
  • Senior Jake Sparks has posted a team-high 11 caused turnovers with eight ground balls. Senior Colin Vandewater ranks second on the team with six caused turnovers and has 12 ground balls.
  • Senior Mitch Streety leads the Redhawks on face-offs, going 65-104 (.625) with a team-high 32 ground balls. Senior Anthony Diamico is second on the team with 26 ground balls.
  • One-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week senior Pat Hynes is 4-1 on the year in goal with 43 saves and a .544 save percentage.

Mercy resumes action on Sunday, March 28th when they host Wilmington at 1 p.m.
