Scouting the Mavericks
- The Mavericks are coming off a 7-2 loss to Caldwell on Tuesday. Graduate student Anthony Murphy went 1-for-4 with a team-high two RBI and sophomore Nolan Giblin went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
- Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
- The Mavericks started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
- Mercy last started a season 2-1 during the 2018 campaign. The Mavericks last started 3-1 also during the 2018 season. Mercy last started 4-1 or better in 1985 when they started the season 5-1.
- Mercy is 1-4 in their last five meetings against the Chargers dating back to 2012. The Mavericks lone win came in the last meeting on April 9, 2015.
- Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
- In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
- Mercy last posted a winning record in 1990.
- The program record for wins in a season is 26 set in 1990.
- The Mavericks are 2-0 at home this season with wins over Bloomfield and Adelphi.
- Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts in Mercy's season-opening win over Bloomfield on Thursday. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll after throwing seven innings with no earned runs allowed in his collegiate debut to earn the win in Mercy's 12-3 win over Adelphi on Sunday.
- Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks are juniors Ryan Saltzman and Charles Lebron. Saltzman is hitting .444 with one home run, two RBI and two runs scored and Lebron is hitting .400 with a team-high four RBI.
- Graduate student Anthony Murphy is currently 42 hits shy of setting a school record for career hits. He is also six RBI shy of setting a school record for career RBI. Murphy currently has 169 hits and 118 RBI as a Maverick.
- Mercy is currently ranked No. 2 nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (4.85) and is No. 8 in fielding percentage (.982).
Scouting the Chargers
- Dominican is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Molloy on Saturday, earning 4-3 and 3-1 victories. The Chargers have now won three games in a row after dropping their season opener.
- Dominican was picked second in the North Division of the CACC Preseason Poll.
- The Chargers went 3-10 during the 2020 shortened season, earning wins over New Haven, Fairmont State and St. Thomas Aquinas.
- During their last full season in 2019, Dominican went 29-25 and advanced to the CACC Tournament Championship.
- The Chargers last made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and have made four NCAA Tournament appearances since 2006.
- In the teams' last meeting on April 9, 2015, Mercy earned a 13-10 win.
- Leading Dominican offensively this season is senior Joshua Colon who is batting .400 with a home run and a team-high six RBI. He also has two triples and four runs scored. Colon is a career .334 hitter with 109 RBI, 186 hits and 111 runs.
- Junior Richard Paulino is hitting .538 with two RBI, four runs and a team-high seven hits. Sophomore Brian Sanders ranks second on the team with three RBI.
- The pitching staff is led by senior Eric Sandusky who is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts in nine innings pitched. Junior Jaden Diaz-Lambert is second on the team with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings. He is 2-0 with nine strikeouts and was named CACC Pitcher of the Week earlier this week.
