Game Preview: No. 9 Men's Lacrosse Hosts Wilmington on Sunday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2021) – The No. 9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts Wilmington University on Sunday, March 28th at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off a 10-9 overtime win over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by junior Brady Kearnan who had a team-high five points on three goals and two assists. Graduate student Tommy McPartland scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Mercy the win.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Sean Rigley was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 5-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 18-2 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance with their first win.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 9 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
  • Mercy is 18-1 in their last 19 home games with the lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst on April 13, 2019.
  • Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last five seasons the tournament was held.
  • This is the first ever meeting between the Mavericks and the Wildcats.
  • Mercy is looking to start 5-0 for the first time since 2019 and are 27-3 over their last 30 games going back to the start of the 2019 season.
  • Kearnan has a team-high 21 points on the year on 13 goals and eight assists to go along with 11 ground balls. The junior is a two-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week.
  • Senior Dominic Scorcia is second on the team with 19 points on eight goals and a team-high 11 assists. He has 13 ground balls and was named to the ECC Honor Roll this week after recording two goals and two assists in the win over Roberts Wesleyan.
  • Junior Jack Gibbons and sophomore TJ Heyder were named to the ECC Honor Roll last week. Gibbons is third on the team with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists and Heyder has seven goals and one assist. McPartland has 10 points on the year on five goals and five assists and recorded his 100th career goal on March 13th against Georgian Court. He became just the fifth Maverick to reach the milestone.
  • The defense is led by junior Jack Kipnes who has 12 ground balls and a team-high five caused turnovers. Freshman Tyler Pjatak and graduate student Bobby Norton are second on the team with four caused turnovers.  Junior Tommy Umano is 4-0 in goal with 29 saves. Umano currently is fifth in Division II in goals against average (5.9) and is ninth in save percentage (.592).
  • Graduate student Antonio Rey was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the USILA Team of the Week last week. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll this week after going 39-of-48 on face-offs with 22 ground balls. Rey ranks third in Division II with a .819 (68-83) face-off win percentage. He also is sixth nationally in ground balls per game (10.25)
  • Kearnan, McPartland, Gibbons, Rey and Rigley all received Preseason All-American honors from the USILA.
  • The Mavericks currently rank among the nation's leaders in assists per game (No. 7 nationally), face-off winning percentage (No. 2), points per game (No. 7), scoring defense (No. 7), scoring margin (No. 8), scoring offense (No. 8) and ground balls per game (No. 1).
Scouting the Wildcats
  • Wilmington is coming off a 16-7 loss to Lake Erie in their season opener on Sunday. The Wildcats were led by freshman Jimmy Cava who had a team-high three goals.
  • Wilmington was picked third in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 5-0 during the shortened season in 2020.
  • The Wildcats went 8-7 during their last full season in 2019 and made the CACC Tournament. In the CACC Semifinals, Wilmington faced Georgian Court, falling 15-6.
  • Wilmington's first season as a program was in 2018. The Wildcats are 17-17 over the course of their first four seasons.
  • Sunday's game will be the first road game for Wilmington since March 3, 2020.
  • Wilmington was led by Cava in their opening game against Lake Erie. He had three goals and one ground ball in his debut. Freshman Giovanni Marino had a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Jake Copio netted a goal and two assists.
  • Leading the defense is one-time CACC Defensive Player of the Week freshman John Greene who had a team-high six caused turnovers and five ground balls against Lake Erie. Sophomore Peyton McDonald added two caused turnovers.
  • Junior Noah Given made the start in goal on Sunday and made 19 saves to take the loss. He is 17-17 for his career with 407 saves and .524 save percentage.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Thursday, April 1st when they host Georgian Court at 3 p.m.
