Scorcia Records Game-High Three Goals and Four Assists as No. 6/9 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Wilmington, 15-2

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2021) – Powered by a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists from senior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 6/9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 15-2 win over Wilmington University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-0) improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2019, while the Wildcats (0-2) remain winless on the year. The two goals allowed ties the school record for fewest goals allowed in a game. Mercy has now allowed two goals on five separate occasions in program history. Prior to today's game the last time they did it was against Roberts Wesleyan on May 1, 2019.

Scorcia added six ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had two goals and two assists and sophomore TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had two goals and one assist. Seniors Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) and Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) both scored twice and junior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had one goal and two assists. Sophomore Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and freshmen Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) also scored. Senior Joseph Guglielmo (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Andrew Calabria (Sachem, N.Y./Sachem North) added assists. Graduate student Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 15-of-17 on face-offs with a game-high 10 ground balls. Senior Sean Rigley (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Onondaga CC) had a game-high three caused turnovers with two ground balls. Graduate student Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had four ground balls, recording the 100th ground ball of his career. Junior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made six saves in the first 40:30 minutes of action to earn the win. Junior Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made six saves in 11:11 minutes of action.

Wilmington was led by Logan Stinson and Ralph Ruggiero who both scored. Noah Given made 17 saves to take the loss.

Heyder got the scoring started less than a minute in off an assist from Scorcia to make it 1-0. Robert Guglielmo and LoRicco closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Ruggiero made it 3-1 with Wilmington's first goal at the 11:18 mark of the second quarter. Kearnan answered with his first goal of the day to make it 4-1 with 9:41 left in the half. LoRicco, Scorcia and Kearnan netted three more goals before halftime to give the Mavericks a 7-1 lead at halftime.

Mercy scored all six goals during the third quarter to build a 13-1 lead after three quarters of play. Gibbons continued the run before Scorcia netted his second of the day to make it 9-1. Heyder, Shargel and Scorcia tallied goals to make it 12-1 before Shagel ended the quarter with his second of the day to give Mercy a commanding lead.

Pjatak scored his first career goal at the 10:01 mark of the fourth quarter and Caskenette added another to increase the Mercy lead to 15-1. Stinson ended a 12-0 Maverick run with a man-up goal with 2:03 left but it was not enough as Mercy earned the convincing win.

Mercy held a 50-37 edge in shots, a 45-23 edge in ground balls and went 18-for-20 on face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 1st when they host Georgian Court at 3 p.m.
