Game Preview: Softball Hosts Molloy in Home Opener on Tuesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2021) – The Mercy College softball team hosts Molloy College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 30th at 2 p.m. in their ECC opener.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off 4-0 and 12-4 losses to Georgian Court in their season opener on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Sydney Johnston who went 2-for-5 in the two games.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Hannah Mueller was named ECC Preseason Player of the Year.
  • Mercy went 5-5 during the 2020 shortened season and went 24-26 during their last full season in 2019 just missing the ECC Tournament.
  • The Mavericks last made the ECC Tournament in 2018 and made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after winning their first ECC Championship.
  • Mercy is playing their first home game in 703 days. The Mavericks last played at home on April 27, 2019.
  • Mercy is 12-33 against Molloy since 2007. The Mavericks last played Molloy on April 13, 2019 earning a doubleheader sweep.
  • The Mavericks look to start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2017.
  • Sophomore Sydney Johnston led the Mavericks at the plate in the doubleheader at Georgian Court, hitting a team-high .400 with two hits, one run and one double. She was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.
  • Junior Alexis Crawford hit .333 in the first two games with two hits, a run and a stolen base and sophomore Nicole Smart also hit .333 with one hit, one double and an RBI. Sophomore Samantha Franck hit her first collegiate home run in game two and had a team-high three RBI on the week.
  • Senior Casey Akers also recorded a hit for the Mavericks during the doubleheader at Georgian Court.
  • Senior Jessica Becchetti led the Mavericks in the circle with a 3.50 ERA in her game one start. She pitched 4.0 innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.
  • Junior Catherine Zucker came in relief in both games and had a 4.42 ERA in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Scouting the Lions
  • Molloy is coming off 2-1 and 6-4 losses to New Haven on Thursday. The Lions opened their season with eight straight wins before falling to the Chargers.
  • The Lions were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll.
  • Molloy went 1-6 during the 2020 shortened season and went 17-34 during their last full season in 2019.
  • The Lions last had a winning record in 2018 when they went 30-25 and last made the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
  • Molloy is looking to start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2016.
  • The Lions are led by one-time ECC Player of the Week redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby who is hitting .333 with a team-high 10 RBI and three home runs. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Chrissie Huhn is batting a team-high .424 with five RBI, a team-high nine runs scored and three stolen bases.
  • One-time ECC Player of the Week Marissa Nicoletti is second on the team with a .344 average, eight runs, nine RBI and two home runs.
  • The pitching staff is led by senior Courtney Greene who is 6-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 45 innings with 29 strikeouts. Greene is also hitting .273 with seven RBI and two home runs. Senior Tonianne Larson is 2-0 in the circle with a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings with 15 strikeouts.

Mercy resumes action on Friday, April 2nd when they host D'Youville at 1:30 p.m. for a doubleheader.
