Game Preview: Baseball Opens ECC Play at D'Youville on Friday and Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2021) – The Mercy College baseball team plays at D'Youville College in their ECC opener this Friday, April 2nd at 3:30 p.m. before ending the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3rd starting at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • The Mavericks are coming off a 6-2 loss to Dominican last Thursday at Mercy Field. Mercy was led by graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez and junior Ryan Saltzman who each recorded an RBI.
  • Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
  • Mercy last started a season 6-3 or better in 1985 when they started 7-2.
  • This weekend's games are the first meetings between the two schools.
  • The Mavericks received votes in the NCBWA East Region poll last week.
  • Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
  • In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
  • Mercy last posted a winning record in 1990.
  • The program record for wins in a season is 26 set in 1990.
  • Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and is currently 1-1 on the year with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings. The duo has combined for 19 strikeouts in 22 innings.
  • Sophomore Kevin Seckler pitched three hitless innings in game two to earn the win over Dominican on March 21st. Freshman Luis Ruiz has pitched six innings in three appearances and has a 1.50 ERA with a save and five strikeouts.
  • Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting a team-high .421 with a team-high eight hits and six RBI. Sophomore Nolan Giblin was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is batting .333 with a team-high five runs scored.
  • Graduate student Anthony Murphy is currently 40 hits shy of setting a school record for career hits. He is also six RBI shy of setting a school record for career RBI. Murphy currently has 171 hits and 118 RBI as a Maverick.
Scouting the Saints
  • D'Youville is coming off 10-1 and 8-1 losses to Lincoln on March 27th in their ECC opener.
  • The Saints were picked last in the ECC Preseason Poll in their first year as members of the conference. D'Youville is making the transition from Division III to Division II. 
  • D'Youville went 1-6 during the 2020 shortened season and went 2-27 during their last full season in 2019.
  • The Saints are 2-2 at home this year with wins over Hilbert and Cazenovia.
  • Leading D'Youville offensively this season is sophomore Jeremy Glinski who is batting a team-high .450 with a team-high nine hits, seven runs and five doubles with two RBI and six stolen bases. Sophomore Mateo Santos is hitting .292 with a team-high six RBI and freshman Alex Dzimian is hitting .333 with seven hits, two runs and two RBI.
  • The pitching staff is led by senior Adam Lampman who has pitched a team-high 21.0 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 6.00 ERA in four starts. Sophomore Jared Glowniak has a team-best 4.91 ERA in 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts. Dzimian and sophomore Kyle Nash have both recorded a win on the season and Nash has a save in 7.2 innings with a 5.87 ERA.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Thursday, April 8th when they host Felician at 3 p.m.
