Scouting the Mavericks
- The Mavericks are coming off 1-0 and 5-3 losses to Bridgeport on Saturday.
- Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
- Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
- Mercy is off to their best 12-game start since 1985 when they started 9-3.
- Mercy is 16-38 against the Spartans in their last 54 meetings dating back to 2006.
- The two teams last met on April 23, 2019 with Mercy earning a 7-6 win at Mercy Field.
- The Mavericks received votes in the NCBWA East Region poll this week.
- Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
- In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

- Junior Austin DeRosa was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter against D'Youville on April 3rd. Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday. He is currently 3-1 on the year with a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in 24 innings. The duo has combined for 53 strikeouts in 47 innings.
- Freshman Luis Ruiz has pitched eight innings in four appearances and has a 1.13 ERA with a save and seven strikeouts.
- Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting a team-high .409 with a team-high 18 hits to go along with 10 RBI. He ranks fourth in the ECC in batting average and was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday. Graduate student Anthony Murphy was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday and is hitting .317 with a team-high-tying 14 RBI and a team-high two home runs. He set the school record for career RBI in Mercy's win over D'Youville on April 2md. Murphy is two runs shy of 100 for his career. The first baseman is also 31 hits of setting a new school record for career hits.
- Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and is hitting .313 with 13 RBI to go along with 11 runs and a team-high six doubles. Sophomore Nolan Giblin is second on the team with a .341 average and leads the team with 13 runs scored.
Scouting the Spartans
- St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off an 11-4 win over Staten Island on Saturday.
- The Spartans were picked second in the ECC preseason poll and have opened their season with nine straight wins.
- St. Thomas Aquinas went 5-9 during the 2020 shortened season and went 18-28 during their last full season in 2019. The Spartans last had a winning record in 2018 when they went 39-15, won the ECC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
- The Spartans have played eight of their first nine games on the road and are 8-0 in those games.
- St. Thomas Aquinas is receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Top 25 National Poll and is ranked No. 3 in the NCBWA East Region Poll.
- Leading the offense for the Spartans is one-time ECC Player of the Week senior James Versage who has a team-high 13 RBI with a team-high 12 runs. He is batting .406 on the year and has a team-high four doubles. Junior Danny Di Marzo is second on the team with 11 RBI and sophomore Andrew Jemison is hitting .417 with nine RBI and ten runs scored. Senior Brian Donnelly leads the team with 14 hits and has eight RBI with 11 runs scored. Senior Anthony Maisano is hitting .289 with nine RBI, 11 runs scored and a team-high five stolen bases.
- Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Sean Lynch is hitting .474 with nine RBI and four runs scored.
- The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week senior Alex Mack who is 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 19.2 innings. Senior Angelo Baez is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14 innings. Junior Aaron Dona, freshman Will Kindl and senior Reyan Mustafoski have combined to make four starts on the year and are 3-0.
