Scouting the Mavericks
- Mercy is coming off a 15-2 win over Wilmington on March 28th. The Mavericks were led by senior Dominic Scorcia who had a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
- Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Sean Rigley was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 5-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 18-2 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance with their first win.
- The Mavericks highest ranked win against an opponent was against No. 2 Le Moyne on February 17, 2019.
- Mercy is currently ranked No. 8 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
- Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last five seasons the tournament was held.
- The Mavericks are 0-4 all-time against Mercyhurst. Mercy lost the last meeting on April 13, 2019, 10-2. Mercy last played at Mercyhurst in 2011.
- Mercy is looking to start 6-0 for the first time since 2019 and are 28-3 over their last 31 games going back to the start of the 2019 season.
- Scorcia has a team-high 26 points on the year on 11 goals and 15 assists to go along with 19 ground balls. The senior is a one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week and is six goals shy of 100 for his career.
- Junior Brady Kearnan is second on the team with 25 points on 15 goals and 10 assists. He has 12 ground balls and has been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week twice.
- Junior Jack Gibbons and sophomore TJ Heyder have each been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and Heyder was tabbed Rookie of the Week on March 29th. Gibbons is third on the team with 18 points on nine goals and nine assists and Heyder has nine goals and two assists.
- Graduate student Tommy McPartland has 10 points on the year on five goals and five assists and recorded his 100th career goal on March 13th against Georgian Court. He became just the fifth Maverick to reach the milestone.
- The defense is led by junior Jack Kipnes who has 12 ground balls and a team-high-tying five caused turnovers. Freshman Tyler Pjatak, graduate student Bobby Norton and senior Sean Rigley also have a team-high-tying five caused turnovers. Junior Tommy Umano is 5-0 in goal with 35 saves. Umano currently is first in Division II in goals against average (5.17) and is fourth in save percentage (.625).
- Graduate student Antonio Rey has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week once, has been named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week twice and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. Rey ranks first in Division II with a .830 (83-100) face-off win percentage. He also is sixth nationally in ground balls per game (10.2)
- Kearnan, McPartland, Gibbons, Rey and Rigley all received Preseason All-American honors from the USILA.
- The Mavericks currently rank among the nation's leaders in assists per game (No. 7 nationally), face-off winning percentage (No. 1), points per game (No. 8), scoring defense (No. 1), scoring margin (No. 8), scoring offense (No. 10) and ground balls per game (No. 1).
Scouting the Lakers
- Mercyhurst is coming off a 19-7 win over Walsh on Saturday.
- The Lakers were picked first in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) after going 5-0 during the 2020 shortened season.
- Mercyhurst went 13-4 during their last full season in 2019 and lost to Merrimack in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
- The Lakers have won 12 games in a row dating back to last year and are ranked No. 3 in the nation in the USILA Poll and Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
- Mercyhurst has made the NCAA Tournament six times since 2010 and won the National Championship in 2011.
- The Lakers have won all seven games this year by five or more goals including five wins by double-digit goals.
- Mercyhurst is led offensively by three-time GMAC Player of the Week and two-time USILA Team of the Week selection senior Caleb Kueber who has a team-high 34 goals and 55 points in seven starts. Kueber leads the nation in goals per game and points per game. Senior Devin Pipher has a team-high 26 assists and is second on the team with 40 points. Pipher ranks second nationally in assists per game. Sophomore Bryce Johnson has 14 goals and 14 assists on the year and senior Nathan Grenon has 14 goals and five assists.
- Leading the defense is senior Tommy Angelicola who has a team-high 16 caused turnovers with 20 ground balls and two goals. Senior Michael Rossi has nine caused turnovers and 12 ground balls and senior Haden Bates has eight caused turnovers with 17 ground balls.
- Leading Mercyhurst in face-offs is sophomore Shawn Doran who is 104-150 (.693) on face-offs with a team-high 78 ground balls.
- Graduate student Cole Pellicano has made all seven starts in goal and is 7-0 with 50 saves, a .562 save percentage and 6.8 goals against average.
- Mercyhurst leads Division II in assists per game, is second in points per game, is third in scoring margin and is third in scoring offense.
