Game Preview: Baseball Faces Queens on Friday and Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2021) – The Mercy College baseball team hosts ECC foe Queens College on Friday, April 16th for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. The Mavericks will then play at Queens on Saturday, April 17th for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • The Mavericks are coming off a 7-2 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday.
  • Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
  • Mercy is off to their best 13-game start since 2009 when they also started 7-6.
  • Mercy is 27-39-1 against Queens dating back to 2001.
  • The two teams last met on March 24, 2019 with Mercy earning a 3-2 win.
  • The Mavericks look to start 5-3 in ECC play for the first time since 2014. Mercy looks to start 7-3 in ECC play for the first time in program history.
  • The Mavericks received votes in the NCBWA East Region poll last week.
  • Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
  • In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

  • Junior Austin DeRosa was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter against D'Youville on April 3rd. Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and was named ECC Rookie of the Week last week. He is currently 3-1 on the year with a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in 24 innings. The duo has combined for 53 strikeouts in 47 innings.
  • Freshman Gaetano Pennisi has pitched 5.1 innings in four appearances and has a 0.00 ERA with eight strikeouts. Sophomore Kevin Seckler is 1-1 on the mound with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings pitched.
  • Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting a team-high .396 with a team-high 19 hits to go along with 10 RBI. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week. Graduate student Anthony Murphy was named ECC Player of the Week last week and is hitting .302 with a team-high 14 RBI and a team-high two home runs. He set the school record for career RBI in Mercy's win over D'Youville on April 2nd. Murphy is two runs shy of 100 for his career. The first baseman is also 31 hits of setting a new school record for career hits.
  • Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is hitting .288 with 13 RBI to go along with 11 runs and a team-high six doubles. Sophomore Nolan Giblin is second on the team with a .313 average and leads the team with 14 runs scored.
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens is coming off an 8-0 win over D'Youville on April 10th.
  • The Knights were picked in a tie for third in the ECC Preseason Poll.
  • Queens went 4-8 during the 2020 shortened season and went 25-24-1 during their last full season in 2019, earning a spot in the ECC Tournament.  
  • The Knights are 5-1 at home and 1-4 on the road.
  • Queens is led at the plate by sophomore Teovaldo Estevez who is batting a team-high .353 with a team-high two home runs to go along with eight runs and five RBI. Freshman Andrew Smith is hitting .341 with a team-high eight RBI and 14 hits with six runs scored and two triples.
  • Freshman Brad Sakellarides is second on the team with seven RBI and sophomore Colin Diez has six RBI, six runs scored and five stolen bases.
  • The pitching staff is led by junior Liam Pulsipher who is 2-1 with a team-best 2.57 ERA in 21 innings with 26 strikeouts. Sophomore Dean Fazah is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Senior Rob Backus is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings with 23 strikeouts.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Friday, April 23rd when they host Staten Island for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
