11 Mavericks Score as No. 3/4 Men's Lacrosse Earns 21-4 Win Over STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2021) – Powered by 11 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 3/4 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 21-4 victory over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.

The Mavericks (7-0, 2-0 ECC) remain unbeaten on the year, while the Spartans (0-6, 0-3 ECC) remain winless on the year. The 21 goals are the most scored by Mercy since they scored 22 against American International on February 13, 2019.

Junior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists and sophomore TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and freshman Andrew Calabria (Sachem, N.Y./Sachem North) each had three goals and an assist. Freshmen Kyle Gabrinowitz (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Augustine Longhitano (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) each scored the first three goals of their collegiate careers. Junior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two goals and an assist and freshman Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a goal and two assists. Seniors Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) both had a goal and an assist and freshman Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary) had a goal and three assists. Freshman Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) added a goal and sophomore Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two assists. Sophomore Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), freshman Cristian Castles (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and graduate student Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each added an assist. Graduate student Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y/Liverpool) went 6-for-8 on face-offs with five ground balls, sophomore Mustapha Daffeh (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) went 9-for-11 on face-offs and freshman Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 6-for-10 on face-offs with five ground balls. Sophomore Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had five ground balls and one caused turnover and graduate student Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a team-high two caused turnovers. Junior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made one save in 18:13 minutes of action to earn the win. Junior Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made five saves in 18:48 minutes of action and freshman Giovanni Guido (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) stopped six shots in 11:32 minutes of action.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Tyler Senatore who had a game-high four goals. Ryan Guild made five saves in 18:12 minutes of action to take the loss.

Mercy jumped all over the Spartans from the start, scoring the game's first six goals to take a 6-0 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter. Kearnan scored the game's first two goals and Heyder followed with back-to-back goals to make it 4-0. Gibbons and Heyder finished off the run to give Mercy a commanding lead. Senatore scored at the 3:56 mark to make it 6-1. Gibbons closed the scoring in the quarter with his second of the day to make it 7-1 after one quarter.

The Mavericks scored all six goals in the second quarter to take a 13-1 lead at halftime. Scorcia and Pjatak found the back of the net to make it 9-1 before Calabria netted two straight goals to increase the Mavericks lead to 11-1. Caskenette made it 12-1 with 7:01 left in the half and Calabria finished off the scoring in the half with his third of the day.

Senatore scored two straight goals to open the third quarter, cutting the Mercy lead to 13-3. Shargel made it 14-3 at the 9:49 mark and Gabrinowitz continued the onslaught with his first two collegiate goals to give Mercy a 16-3 lead. Longhitano produced his first collegiate goal with less than a minute left in the quarter to put the Mavericks ahead 17-3 after three quarters.

DeMonte and Longhitano tallied goals to open the fourth quarter, giving Mercy a 19-3 lead. Senatore made it 19-4 at the 8:18 mark. Gabrinowitz and Longhitano finished off the scoring with goals to secure their first career hat-tricks.

Mercy held a 58-29 edge in shots, a 56-34 edge in ground balls and went 22-of-29 on face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 24th when they host No. 7 Seton Hill at 2 p.m.
