DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2021) – Despite a team-high three points from junior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), the No. 4 Mercy College men's lacrosse team suffered a 12-5 setback to No. 7 Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field in an ECC-GMAC Challenge Cup Game.
The Mavericks (7-1) suffer their first loss of the season, while the Griffins (8-1) have won five games in a row.
Gibbons had a team-high two goals with one assist. Senior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), sophomore TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and senior Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) also scored. Junior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) and graduate student Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) dished out assists. Sophomore Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a team-high two caused turnovers and graduate student Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 11-for-20 on face-offs. Junior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 13 saves to take the loss.
Seton Hill was led by Thomas Hanulak who had a game-high six goals. Kevin Mo made 19 saves to earn the win.
The Griffins scored the game's first two goals before LoRicco made it 2-1 with an unassisted goal at the 10:06 mark of the first quarter. Hanulak scored back-to-back goals to close out the quarter, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
Heyder got the Mavericks to within two, 4-2, with 13:25 left in the second quarter. However, Seton Hill scored the final three goals of the quarter to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.
Gibbons netted two straight goals to open the third quarter, cutting the Seton Hill lead to 7-4 with 11:42 left in the third quarter. Seton Hill recorded the final goal of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead after three quarters.
The Griffins opened the fourth quarter with four straight goals to take a 12-4 lead with 7:46 left to play. Scorcia scored a late goal to make it 12-5, but it was not enough and Seton Hill came away with the win.
Seton Hill held a 42-34 edge in shots and a 30-16 edge in ground balls. Mercy went 11-for-20 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 28th when they host Frostburg State at 3 p.m.
