(Apr. 23, 2021) – The Mercy College softball team hosts St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, April 24th at 1 p.m. The Mavericks will then face Bridgeport on Sunday, April 25th at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. Mercy will conclude their game against Bridgeport from April 22nd prior to the doubleheader on Sunday.

Scouting the Mavericks

• Mercy is coming off a 3-0 game one win over Bridgeport on Thursday. Game two was suspended after eight innings due to darkness with the score tied at 1-1. The game will resume on April 25th.
• Mercy was picked to finish 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Hannah Mueller was named ECC Preseason Player of the Year.
• Mercy went 5-5 during the 2020 shortened season and went 24-26 during their last full season in 2019 just missing the ECC Tournament.
• The Mavericks last made the ECC Tournament in 2018 and made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after winning their first ECC Championship.
• Mercy is looking to start 18-6 for the first time since 1987.
• The Mavericks are looking to start 17-3 in ECC play for the first time in program history.
• Mercy played STAC on April 14th and fell 5-4 and 10-0.
• Mercy beat Bridgeport in game one on Thursday, 3-0.
• Mercy last swept STAC at home in 2018 and last swept Bridgeport at home in 2018.
• Senior Danielle Burgos was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and is batting .441 with 15 runs, 12 RBI and seven stolen bases. Junior Alexis Crawford was named ECC Player of the Week on April 5th and is batting an ECC-best .455 on the year with a team-high 30 hits and 19 stolen bases. She also has 18 runs, seven RBI, one double and two triples on the year. Senior Hannah Mueller is batting .438 on the year with six RBI, 12 runs and two stolen bases. She was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 5th.
• Junior Ylannah Bowman has a .340 batting average with two home runs, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored and senior Alyssa Guzman has a .317 average with 11 RBI, a home run and six runs scored.
• Sophomore Sydney Johnston was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday and is batting .348 with a team-high-tying 12 RBI to go along with 12 runs and five doubles. Sophomore Samantha Franck has 10 RBI and a team-high-tying two home runs on the year.
• Sophomore Alexi Benson leads the Mavericks in the circle with a 6-1 record in 46.1 innings. Benson has a 2.57 ERA and a team-high 50 strikeouts. She was named ECC Rookie of the Week on April 5th. Senior Jessica Becchetti has appeared in 25.2 innings with 22 strikeouts and is 3-2 on the season.
• Junior Catherine Zucker has pitched 21.2 innings of relief and has a 2.91 ERA with 22 strikeouts. She is 2-1 in the circle on the year.

Scouting the Spartans

• St. Thomas Aquinas earned 13-0 and 10-4 victories over Staten Island on Thursday. STAC will host Bridgeport on Friday before facing Mercy on Saturday.
• The Spartans have won five games in a row and are 5-1 on the road this year.
• St. Thomas Aquinas was picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 1-9 last year.
• The Spartans went 25-21 during their last full season in 2019, earning a spot in the ECC Tournament.
• Leading St. Thomas Aquinas at the plate is senior Amanda Schweitzer who is batting .400 with 22 hits, nine RBI, a home run and 10 runs. Senior Melissa Sadler has a team-high 20 RBI with 23 runs and a .352 average. Junior Amanda Castro is hitting a team-high .421 with 11 RBI and 10 runs scored.
• Junior Kim Astrologo is hitting .326 with six RBI, four doubles and nine runs and sophomore Emilee Mayer has 11 RBI and a home run.
• ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year senior Carissa Della Vecchia is hitting .371 with a team-high eight home runs and 23 runs scored. She also has 15 RBI, six doubles and three triple. Della Vecchia is also 8-1 in the circle with a 1.64 ERA in 59.2 innings with 99 strikeouts. She has been named ECC Pitcher of the Week twice and ECC Player of the Week once this season.
• Also contributing in the circle is one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week senior Paige Toothaker who is 8-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 65.2 innings with 36 strikeouts.

Scouting the Purple Knights

• Bridgeport fell to Mercy in game one on Thursday, 3-0. The Purple Knights will face STAC on Friday before playing at Mercy on Sunday.
• The Purple Knights were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll.
• Bridgeport went 8-5 during the 2020 shortened season. The Purple Knights went 33-16 during their last full season in 2019 winning the ECC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
• The Purple Knights have won 11 of their first 12 games with their lone loss coming to Molloy on Saturday.
• Bridgeport is led by senior Elyssa Marmolejo who is a one-time ECC Player of the Week this season and is hitting .371 with eight runs and six RBI. Sophomore Meg McFarland is hitting .367 with a team-high 12 runs scored to go along with seven RBI.
• Senior Kaira Ramon leads the team with 13 RBI and has eight runs and four doubles.
• Sophomore Kaite Burawski is a two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week and leads the pitching staff with a 5-1 record and 1.26 ERA in 39 innings. She has 65 strikeouts and has allowed just seven earned runs in her seven appearances. Senior Miranda Hillman is 3-1 in the circle and has a 1.34 ERA in 41.2 innings with 32 strikeouts.
