Game Preview: Baseball Faces No. 20 STAC and Lincoln This Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2021) – The Mercy College baseball team plays at No. 20 STAC on Wednesday, April 28th at 3:30 p.m. Mercy then host Lincoln on Friday, April 30th for a doubleheader at 12 pm before concluding the season series with Lincoln on Saturday, May 1st at 3 p.m. The Mavericks end the week hosting No. 20 STAC for Senior Day on Sunday, May 2nd at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • The Mavericks are coming off 11-4 and 5-4 victories over Staten Island on Saturday.
  • Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
  • Mercy is off to their best 21-game start since 1985.
  • Mercy dropped a 7-2 decision to STAC on April 13th at Mercy Field.
  • The Mavericks are off to their best start in ECC play in program history.
  • The last time Mercy had a winning streak of seven or more games was in 1990.
  • Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.

  • Junior Austin DeRosa was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter against D'Youville on April 3rd. Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and was named ECC Rookie of the Week on April 5th. He is currently 5-1 on the year with a 2.37 ERA in 38 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 36 innings. The duo has combined for 78 strikeouts in 74 innings.
  • Freshman Gaetano Pennisi has pitched 5.1 innings in four appearances and has a 0.00 ERA with eight strikeouts. Freshman Max Rank has posted a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts and one save.
  • Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting .338 with 26 hits to go along with 19 RBI. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 5th. Graduate student Anthony Murphy was named ECC Player of the Week on April 5th and was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week. He is hitting .286 with 18 RBI and a team-high three home runs. He set the school record for career RBI in Mercy's win over D'Youville on April 2nd. Murphy recorded his 100th career run in the game one win over Queens on April 17th. The first baseman is also 26 hits of setting a new school record for career hits.
  • Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 5th and is hitting .341 with 19 RBI to go along with 17 runs and a team-high nine doubles. Sophomore Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .342 and leads the team with 22 runs scored. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday. Sophomore Justin Glennerster was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is hitting .327 on the year with five doubles and eight RBI.
Scouting the Spartans
  • STAC defeated Molloy 6-2 in game one Saturday before falling 13-12 in game two.
  • The Spartans were picked second in the ECC preseason poll and have opened their season 16-2.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas went 5-9 during the 2020 shortened season and went 18-28 during their last full season in 2019. The Spartans last had a winning record in 2018 when they went 39-15, won the ECC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Spartans are 5-0 at home this year.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked No. 20 nationally in the latest NCBWA Top 25 National Poll and is ranked No. 2 in the NCBWA East Region Poll.
  • Leading the offense for the Spartans is one-time ECC Player of the Week senior James Versage who has a team-high 21 RBI with 21 runs. He is batting .373 on the year and has a team-high seven doubles. Sophomore Andrew Jemison is hitting a team-high .433 with 17 RBI and a team-high 22 runs scored. Junior Danny Di Marzo is hitting .371 with a team-high-tying 21 RBI with 15 runs. Senior Brian Donnelly is batting .333 with 19 RBI and a team-high three home runs with 18 runs.
  • Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Sean Lynch is hitting .481 with 10 RBI and five runs scored.
  • The pitching staff is led by two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week senior Alex Mack who is 4-0 with a 1.34 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 33.2 innings. Senior Angelo Baez is 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. Junior Aaron Dona is 2-0 on the mound with a 2.38 ERA in 22.2 innings with 28 strikeouts.
Scouting the Lions
  • Lincoln dropped 13-4 and 5-1 decisions to Queens on Saturday.
  • The Lions were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 2-6 during the 2020 shortened season.
  • During their last full season in 2019, Lincoln went 2-39.
  • Lincoln is 0-8 on the road this season.
  • The Lions have lost seven straight games after starting ECC play 4-0.
  • Leading the offense is one-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Hilman Truss who is batting a team-high .375 with 20 RBI, two home runs and 11 runs. Sophomore Willie Hines is hitting .365 with 12 RBI and 14 runs scored and senior Kashif Hill has a team-high 15 runs with a .304 average.
  • Senior Elias Beltre has a .364 average and a team-high three home runs with nine RBI and six doubles.
  • The pitching staff is led by senior Rolando Alvarez who is 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 31.2 innings with 29 strikeouts. Junior Trevon Sutton is 2-3 on the bump with a 7.22 ERA in 28.2 innings with 22 strikeouts.
