Game Preview: Softball Faces Bridgeport, Queens and Molloy to End Regular Season

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2021) – The Mercy College softball team hosts Bridgeport on Wednesday, April 28th at 12 p.m. for Senior Day. Mercy will conclude their game against Bridgeport from April 22nd prior to the doubleheader on Wednesday. The Mavericks will then play at Queens on Thursday, April 29th at 2:30 p.m. before ending the regular season at Molloy on Sunday, May 2nd at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off 3-0 and 4-1 losses to STAC on Saturday.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll and senior Hannah Mueller was named ECC Preseason Player of the Year.
  • Mercy went 5-5 during the 2020 shortened season and went 24-26 during their last full season in 2019 just missing the ECC Tournament.
  • The Mavericks last made the ECC Tournament in 2018 and made the NCAA Tournament in 2017 after winning their first ECC Championship.
  • Mercy is looking to reach 20 wins for the fifth straight full season.
  • The Mavericks are looking to secure their first ECC Regular Season Championship since 2017.
  • Mercy beat Bridgeport in game one last Thursday, 3-0. Game two was halted after eight innings due to darkness with the score tied at 1-1.
  • The Mavericks defeated Queens by scores of 5-4 and 9-1 on April 13th. Mercy swept Molloy on March 30th by scores of 4-3 and 6-3.
  • Senior Danielle Burgos was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is batting .415 with 15 runs, 12 RBI and seven stolen bases. Junior Alexis Crawford was named ECC Player of the Week on April 5th and is batting .451 on the year with a team-high 32 hits and 19 stolen bases. She also has 18 runs, seven RBI, one double and two triples on the year. Senior Hannah Mueller is batting a team-high .463 on the year with seven RBI, 12 runs and two stolen bases. She was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 5th.
  • Junior Ylannah Bowman has a .327 batting average with two home runs, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored and senior Alyssa Guzman has a .302 average with 11 RBI, a home run and six runs scored.
  • Sophomore Sydney Johnston was named ECC Rookie of the Week last week and is batting .340 with a team-high-tying 12 RBI to go along with 12 runs and five doubles. Sophomore Samantha Franck has 10 RBI and a team-high-tying two home runs on the year.
  • Sophomore Alexi Benson leads the Mavericks in the circle with a 6-2 record in 53.1 innings. Benson has a 2.63 ERA and a team-high 56 strikeouts. She was named ECC Rookie of the Week on April 5th. Junior Katelyn Shephard was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on Monday and is 1-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 14.1 innings with 14 strikeouts.
  • Junior Catherine Zucker has pitched 21.2 innings of relief and has a 2.91 ERA with 22 strikeouts. She is 2-1 in the circle on the year.
Scouting the Purple Knights
  • Bridgeport last played on Friday at STAC and dropped game one 7-1 before earning a 3-1 win in game two. The Purple Knights will face STAC again on Tuesday before taking on Mercy on Wednesday.
  • The Purple Knights were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll.
  • Bridgeport went 8-5 during the 2020 shortened season. The Purple Knights went 33-16 during their last full season in 2019 winning the ECC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Purple Knights are 7-1 on the road this year.
  • Bridgeport is led by senior Elyssa Marmolejo who is a one-time ECC Player of the Week this season and is hitting .366 with nine runs and six RBI. Sophomore Meg McFarland is hitting .327 with a team-high 12 runs scored to go along with seven RBI.
  • Senior Kaira Ramon leads the team with 13 RBI and has eight runs and four doubles.
  • Sophomore Kaite Burawski is a two-time ECC Pitcher of the Week and leads the pitching staff with a 6-1 record and 1.22 ERA in 46 innings. She has 73 strikeouts and has allowed just eight earned runs in her eight appearances. Senior Miranda Hillman is 3-2 in the circle and has a 2.20 ERA in 47.2 innings with 34 strikeouts.
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens last played on Sunday and fell 3-2 and 12-11 to D'Youville. The Knights will face Molloy on Tuesday before hosting Mercy on Thursday.
  • The Knights were picked in a tie for fifth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 0-10 last year.
  • In their last full season in 2019, Queens went 7-30.
  • The Knights have lost three straight games and are 0-2 on the road this season.
  • Queens is led at the plate by senior Marisa Sagona who is batting .347 with seven RBI and a team-high 17 hits. She also has five stolen bases and six runs scored. Senior Danielle D'Angelo has a team-high nine RBI with five runs and three doubles.
  • Junior Noelle Bryggman is hitting a team-high .354 with nine runs to go with five stolen bases. Sophomore Cyarra Alvarado has a team-high 12 runs with five doubles and six RBI.
  • The pitching staff is led by junior Emma Wimmer who is 2-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 56.2 innings with 27 strikeouts. Freshman Arianna Fracchioni is 0-7 with a 6.55 ERA in 47 innings with 14 strikeouts.
Scouting the Lions
  • Molloy is coming off 3-0 and 7-1 victories over STAC on Sunday. The Lions will face Queens, STAC and D'Youville before hosting Mercy on Sunday.
  • The Lions were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll.
  • Molloy went 1-6 during the 2020 shortened season and went 17-34 during their last full season in 2019.
  • The Lions last had a winning record in 2018 when they went 30-25 and last made the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
  • Molloy currently sits in fourth place in the ECC standings.
  • The Lions are led by four-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Chrissie Huhn who is batting a team-high .430 with 16 RBI, a team-high 21 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.
  • One-time ECC Player of the Week Marissa Nicoletti is hitting .287 with 16 RBI and 18 runs scored. Junior Amanda King is hitting .284 with 16 RBI and three home runs. King is also 2-5 in the circle with a 5.15 ERA in 50.1 innings with 31 strikeouts.
  • The pitching staff is led by one-time ECC Player of the Week and one-time ECC Pitcher of the Week senior Courtney Greene who is 12-5 with a 1.48 ERA in 108.2 innings with 70 strikeouts. Greene is also hitting .357 with a team-high 22 RBI and five home runs. Senior Tonianne Larson is 4-2 in the circle with a 3.35 ERA in 46 innings with 33 strikeouts.
