Game Preview: Baseball Plays Bridgeport on Friday and Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2021) – The Mercy College baseball team hosts ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Friday, April 9th at 3 p.m. The Mavericks will then play a doubleheader at Bridgeport on Saturday, April 10th starting at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • The Mavericks are coming off 20-4 and 6-0 victories over D'Youville on Saturday. Junior Austin DeRosa tossed the first no-hitter in the ECC since 2017 and the first in Mercy history in over 20 years in game two.
  • Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
  • Mercy is off to their best nine-game start since 1985 when they started 7-2. The Mavericks last started 7-3 or better in 1985. With a sweep of Bridgeport, the Mavericks would be off to their best 12-game start since 1985 when they started 9-3.
  • Mercy is 12-38 against Bridgeport dating back to 2006. The teams last met on April 1, 2019 with Bridgeport coming away with an 8-7 win in 15 innings.
  • The Mavericks received votes in the NCBWA East Region poll this week.
  • Mercy is looking to make their first ECC Championship since 2010.
  • In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
  • Mercy last posted a winning record in 1990.
  • The program record for wins in a season is 26 set in 1990.
  • Mercy is looking to start 4-0 in ECC play for the first time in program history.
  • The Mavericks are looking to sweep the season series with Bridgeport for the first time since 2008.
  • DeRosa was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter and he is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in eight innings. Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday. He is currently 2-1 on the year with an ECC-best 1.59 ERA in 17 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings. The duo has combined for 38 strikeouts in 34 innings.
  • Freshman Luis Ruiz has pitched six innings in three appearances and has a 1.50 ERA with a save and five strikeouts.
  • Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting a team-high .500 with a team-high 17 hits to go along with 10 RBI. He ranks third in the ECC in batting average and was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday. Graduate student Anthony Murphy was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday and is hitting .364 with a team-high-tying 13 RBI and a team-high two home runs. He set the school record for career RBI in Mercy's win over D'Youville on Friday. Murphy is four runs shy of 100 for his career. The first baseman is also 32 hits of setting a new school record for career hits.
  • Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and is hitting .351 with a team-high-tying 13 RBI to go along with nine runs and a team-high five doubles. Sophomore Nolan Giblin is second on the team with a .394 average and leads the team with 12 runs scored.
  • Mercy is currently second in Division II in fielding percentage (.993) and is third in hits allowed per nine innings (5.59).
Scouting the Purple Knights
  • Bridgeport is coming off a 14-13 loss to Staten Island in 10 innings on Monday.
  • The Purple Knights were picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Poll. Bridgeport dropped two out of three to Queens to open their season and won two out of three against Staten Island this past weekend.
  • Bridgeport went 5-6-1 during the 2020 shortened season and went 21-29 during their last full season in 2019, making it to the ECC Tournament.
  • The Purple Knights are 3-0 at home this year and 0-3 on the road.
  • Bridgeport is led by senior Andre Marchesseault who is batting a team-high .565 on the year with a team-high eight runs, eight RBI, four doubles, two triples and a home run. Junior Ryan Donnelly is hitting .368 with four RBI, eight runs scored and a team-high five stolen bases. Senior Matt Rodriguez and freshman Anthony Pascale both have six RBI on the year and have combined for 11 runs scored.
  • The pitching staff is led by senior Anthony Martino who is 2-0 on the mound with a team-best 2.25 ERA in 12 innings with 10 strikeouts. Freshman Jason Giambra is second on the team with a 5.19 ERA in 8.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Senior Andrew Francella has a team-high 11 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Sunday, April 11th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
