Scouting the Mavericks
- The Mavericks are coming off a 7-6 loss to No. 19 STAC on Sunday.
- Mercy was picked to finish in a tie for 3rd in the ECC Preseason Poll. It is the highest ranking in the poll for the Mavericks.
- Mercy started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
- Mercy is currently ranked No. 10 in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
- Mercy is off to their best 26-game start since 1984 when they started 18-8.
- Mercy has secured their first ECC Tournament berth since 2010.
- The Mavericks are off to their best start in ECC play in program history.
- In 2018 and 2019, Mercy won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.
- Mercy last posted a winning record in 1990.
- One more ECC win for the Mavericks would set a school record for conference wins, surpassing the previous record of 13 set in 2019 and 2010.
- The program record for wins in a season is 26 set in 1990.
- Junior Austin DeRosa was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after his no-hitter against D'Youville on April 3rd. Sophomore Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week on March 15th and was named ECC Rookie of the Week on April 5th. He is currently 5-1 on the year with a 3.11 ERA in 46.1 innings. Freshman Ryan Rozinski was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 15th and is 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 42.1 innings. The duo has combined for 90 strikeouts in 88.2 innings.
- Freshman Max Rank has posted a 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts and one save. Junior Jonathan Diforio is 2-0 out of the bullpen with a 3.14 ERA in 14.1 innings with 18 strikeouts.
- Leading the offense so far for the Mavericks is junior Charles Lebron who is batting .320 with 31 hits to go along with 24 RBI. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 5th. Graduate student Anthony Murphy was named ECC Player of the Week on April 5th and this week. He is hitting .313 with 30 RBI and a team-high six home runs. He set the school record for career RBI in Mercy's win over D'Youville on April 2nd. Murphy recorded his 100th career run in the game one win over Queens on April 17th.
- Graduate student Miguel Ortiz Sanchez was named to the ECC Honor Roll this week and is hitting a team-high .376 with 25 RBI to go along with 25 runs and a team-high 11 doubles. Sophomore Nolan Giblin is hitting .367 and leads the team with 32 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week. Sophomore Justin Glennerster was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is hitting .306 on the year with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.
Scouting the Lions
- Molloy last played on Sunday at Bridgeport, falling 1-0. The Lions will host Lincoln on Tuesday before playing at Mercy on Friday.
- The Lions were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Sean Hogan and Timothy Panetta were named ECC Preseason Player and Pitcher of the Year.
- During the 2020 shortened season, the Lions went 7-4. In their last full season in 2019, Molloy went 17-27 and just missed qualifying for the ECC Tournament.
- Molloy is ranked No. 4 in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
- Leading the offense is one-time ECC Player of the Week Hogan who is batting a team-high .409 with 26 RBI, 19 runs, seven doubles and three triples. Two-time ECC Player of the Week Matt Overton is hitting .372 with a team-high 29 RBI to go along with 26 runs.
- Jake McCarthy is third on the team with a .378 average and is third with 22 RBI. Peter Theodorellis has a team-high 34 runs scored and is fourth on the team with 21 RBI.
- The pitching staff is led by Charlie Cucchiara who is 2-2 in 30 innings with a 2.40 ERA and 29 strikeouts. Panetta is 5-2 with a 3.35 ERA in 43 innings with 57 strikeouts.
