DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2021) – Despite a game-high eight saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to NE10 foe Bentley University in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-1, 0-1 NE10) fall in their NE10 opener, while the Falcons (2-2, 1-0 NE10) earn a win in their NE10 opener.
Viscione made three saves in the second quarter, one in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter in her season debut. Sophomore Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker had a team-high two shots on goal and junior Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) and sophomores Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Rory McComb (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) also had a shot on goal.
Bentley was led by Bridget Coughlin, Lida Coco and Katie Thies who scored goals. Mia Trottie made six saves to earn the shutout win.
The Falcons wasted little time in scoring as Coughlin scored off a pass from Sam Simione, following a Christine Murray corner, to give Bentley a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute of action.
It remained 1-0 until the 12th minute when the Falcons scored again following a penalty corner to make it 2-0. Thies found the back of the cage after a pass from Ava Bevilacqua to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
Viscione made three key stops in the second quarter to keep the game at 2-0 and Mercy recorded their first two shots on goal, but could not score and the score remained 2-0 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Viscione make another save, but neither team would score, and it remained 2-0 in favor of Bentley after three quarters.
Mercy forced Trottie to make two saves to open the fourth quarter, but Bentley scored again in the 52nd minute to make it 3-0. Coco scored on a long shot to the lower left after a pass from Madison Halas to give the Falcons a three-goal lead. Viscione made three more saves to keep the visitors from scoring again and Palladino recorded two shots on goal. However, Mercy was unable to score and Bentley came away with the 3-0 win.
Bentley held a 13-7 edge in shots and Mercy held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 16th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 4 p.m.
