LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (Sept. 16, 2021) – Powered by eight different Mavericks recording a kill, the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-15) win over Lincoln University on Thursday night.
The Mavericks (3-6) snap a four-match losing streak, while the Lions (0-4) remain winless on the year.
Leading the balanced attack for Mercy was junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) who had a match-high 10 kills, four aces and eight digs. Junior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had eight kills and senior Tynesha Adams (Prattville, Ala./Bethune Cookman University) finished with six kills. Junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) had a match-high 23 assists and senior Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had four kills.
Lincoln was led by Kaiya Lewis who had a team-high six kills.
Mercy jumped out to a 10-4 lead in set one after back-to-back aces from Schneid. Following a Lincoln timeout, the hosts answered with an 11-4 run to take a 15-14 lead. The Mavericks followed with three straight points on two kills from Schneid and one from Adams to make it 17-15. Lincoln made it 17-16, but Mercy rattled off four straight points to take a 21-16 lead. The Lions battled back and got within one, 24-23, but a Gonzalez kill gave Mercy a 25-23 set-one win.
The Mavericks took a 13-9 lead in set two after a Schneid ace and increased the lead to 19-10 after a Lankhorst kill. Lincoln netted three straight points to make it 19-13. Mercy closed the set on a 6-2 run, finished off by a Lankhorst kill, to give the Mavericks a 25-15 win in set two.
The score was 16-15 in favor of Mercy in the third set. The Mavericks went on to close out the set and match with nine straight points, finished off by a Jessica Angounou (Phoenix, Ariz./Betty H. Fairfax) block, to give Mercy a 25-15 set-three win.
Mercy had 33 kills, 27 assists, 26 digs, 13 aces, one block and hit .292. Lincoln had 21 kills, 20 assists, 23 digs, eight aces, four blocks and hit .088.
Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Felician at 6 p.m.
