DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2021) – Despite a career-high 20 saves from senior Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and a goal from junior Katie Kreider (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 6 Millersville University on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-4) have dropped four games in a row, while the Marauders (7-0) remain unbeaten on the season. Mercy scored just the fourth goal of the season given up by Millersville in 2021.
Kreider recorded her first goal of the season and sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) picked up her first collegiate assist. Senior Savanna James (Ellenville, N.Y./Ellenville) made two defensive saves. Viscione made a career-high 20 saves to take the loss. The 20 saves is the most by a Mercy goalie since Julia Amell made 25 saves against Assumption on September 6, 2015.
Millersville was led by Kayla Michaels and Kate Strickland who both scored two goals. Kerstin Koons made one save in 51:54 minutes of action to earn the win.
Mercy held its own against the No. 6 team in the country by not allowing a goal in the first quarter of play. Viscione made six saves in the quarter to keep the Marauders off the scoreboard.
Millersville broke the scoreless tie in the 26th minute when Strickland scored to make it 1-0. Just under four minutes later the Marauders scored again to make it 2-0 as Michaels found the back of the net. It remained just 2-0 heading into halftime as Viscione made 11 saves in the half to keep Mercy in the game.
The visitors scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 4-0 lead in the 35th minute. Mercy continued to battle and broke through with a goal in the 40th minute when Kreider scored following a pass from Rosenfeld after a corner to make it 4-1.
Millersville scored two more goals in the fourth quarter to make it 6-1 and held on for the win.
Millersville held a 41-4 edge in shots and an 18-5 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 22nd when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
