DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2022) – Powered by a career-high 21 saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and the game-winning goal in the 48th minute from graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-2 win over NE10 foe Pace University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-1, 3-1 NE10) match their win total both overall and in NE10 play from last year and have won three games in a row for the first time since 2017. The Setters (5-6, 2-4 NE10) fall below .500 on the year and have dropped two of their last three meetings to Mercy.
Viscione surpasses her previous career high of 20 saves set last season against Millersville and improves to 4-1 in goal this season. Sacco now has a team-high four goals and 10 points and junior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) had a career-high four points on a goal and two assists. She now has two goals, three assists and seven points on the year. Junior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) scored her first collegiate goal and added her first collegiate assist. Junior Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) added a game-high two defensive saves.
Pace was led by Eveline Bussemaker and Krista Dietz who both scored. Alina Buerger made five saves to take the loss.
The Setters had a great scoring chance in the 4th minute of action, but a Frankie Fava penalty stroke was stopped by Viscione to keep the game scoreless.
Mercy broke through with the game's first goal in the 9th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Fitzgerald deflected in a Ringstad shot after taking the penalty corner to give the Mavericks an early lead. Ringstad gave Mercy a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute when she fired home a Fitzgerald corner to give the Mavericks a two-goal lead. Viscione made four saves to close out the quarter, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Viscione made nine saves in the second quarter, but Pace would score goals in the 22nd and 25th minutes to tie the game at 2-2 at halftime.
Viscione made two more stops in the third quarter to keep Pace off the scoreboard and the teams headed into the fourth quarter tied at 2-2.
Viscione made an early save in the fourth quarter on a Dietz shot to keep the game tied. Mercy would take the lead for good in the 48th minute when Sacco fired a Fitzgerald corner into the back of the cage to make it 3-2. Viscione made two more saves and the Mavericks defense withstood a five-minute yellow card to earn the 3-2 win.
Pace held a 31-10 edge in shots and a 25-8 edge in shots on goal. Pace held a 15-4 edge in penalty corners.
