MANCHESTER, N.H. (Oct. 15, 2022) – Despite a game-high two goals from graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and a game-high 13 saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to NE10 foe Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
The Mavericks (4-2, 3-2 NE10) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Penmen (4-7, 2-3 NE10) have won four straight meetings against Mercy.
Sacco now has a team-high six goals and 14 points on the year and junior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) recorded her fourth assist of the season. Junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) added her team-leading fifth assist of the season and junior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) dished out her second assist of the season. Viscione made a game-high 13 saves to take the loss.
Southern N.H. was led by Eliza Bates who had a goal and two assists. Annemartine Christis had a goal and an assist and Emma Peeters made eight saves to earn the win in goal.
Viscione made four saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.
The Penmen scored the game's first goal in the 18th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the 29th minute when Sacco found the back of the cage after a Ringstad pass. The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Southern N.H. took a 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute on a Bates goal and headed into the fourth quarter with a 2-1 lead.
Mercy tied the game again at 2-2 in the 47th minute. Sacco scored following a pass from Palladino after a Fitzgerald corner to even the score again. The Penmen took the lead for good in the 53rd minute scoring after a penalty corner to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) recorded a shot on goal in the 55th minute, but Peeters was able to make the stop and the Penmen held on for the win.
Southern N.H. held a 27-11 edge in shots and a 16-10 edge in shots on goal. The Penmen also held a 24-6 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 19th when they play at STAC at 2:30 p.m.
