Viscione Makes Game-High Nine Saves as Field Hockey Plays at STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2022) – Despite a game-high nine saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to NE10 foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.

The Mavericks (4-3, 3-3 NE10) have dropped two games in a row and fall to the Spartans (5-6, 3-3 NE10) for the fourth straight time.

Viscione stopped nine shots and senior Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) had a team-high two shots on goal. Juniors Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) each added a shot on goal.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Nicola Van Vuuren who had two goals and by Jasmijn Van Drunen who also scored. Jessie Hohenstein made four saves to earn the win.

Viscione made three saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.

Viscione stopped two more shots in the second quarter before Van Vuuren scored in the 22nd minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

Van Drunen made it 2-0 in the 41st minute after a STAC penalty corner. Viscione closed the quarter with a save to keep the score 2-0 at the end of three quarters.

Viscione recorded two more saves early in the fourth quarter before Van Vuuren netted her second goal of the game to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute. Schreck and Palladino forced Hohenstein to make a pair of saves late in the game, but the Mavericks were unable to score and the Spartans earned the 3-0 win.

STAC held a 15-7 edge in shots and a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. The Spartans also held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 22nd when they host Saint Anselm at 1 p.m.
